Smart Placement

Executive Summary

Conceptual Design Phase

Background

Smart Placement is a web application for the School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington. The application is meant to streamline the field education process that students in the School of Social Work must complete in order to graduate. The application will be used by different users such as students, administrators, and agencies. Students will use the system to apply, be assigned, track timesheets, complete weekly supervision logs, and review evaluations. Administrators will use the system to manage agencies, place students, and view all information on students and agencies. While lastly, agencies will use the system to register, request students, assign field instructors, check timesheets and evaluate students. After the completion of the project, it will be in the hands of the School of Social Work to do as they wish with the project.

Students in School of Social Work need to to complete field work in order to graduate, and School of Social Work needs an application to help with the the process of placing and managing students. The current application being used is known as InPlace, but administrators in the School of Social work are dissatisfied with its complicated nature. The sponsor feels as though InPlace is displaying too much information that isn't needed. Along with making simple tasks take too many steps and clicks. Overall InPlace can just be a hassle for non-tech savvy users. That is why our objective with Smart Placement is to allow users to complete all their needed tasks in just a few clicks.

UI - FRONTEND

Frontend user interface is created using ReactJS. Each layer has separate homepages with a navbar which allows users to complete the tasks they need to.

AZURE - BACKENDAzure is being used to host the application. We are currently using an MySQL dummy database that is connected with Azure. In the future document and forms submitted through Smart Placement will also be stored with Azure.

Conclusion

Future Work

The Smart Placement application is currently incomplete and is just in the starting stages of the project. It was mentioned before we began this project that it would take 3 or more senior design teams in order to complete it. At the present time there is already a new team that will take lead for next semester. The system still lacks some core features such as timesheet setup and document management that can be done promptly. Other functions of the application will be harder to tackle such as retrieving student data from MyMav. This part of the application since will need efforts made by OIT and Student Accounts to function properly.

Our project work meets the first few requirements of our sponsor but it will be continually developed in upcoming semester. The School of Social Work has given us a great opportunity in allowing us to help them create a very useful web application. We were able to get acquainted with cloud computing services like Azure and develop our skills in JavaScript.
