Pacing

  • Rate of delivery is comfortable
  • Use pauses to give time for ideas to sink in
    • “Pause for dramatic effect”
  • Practice giving the speech slower than you intend to actually give it
    • In round, lots of people talk quickly due to nervousness so it’s a good idea to practice speaking slower

Vocal Delivery

  • Conversational and Natural
    • Speaking to, not at your audience
  • Appropriate Volume
  • Varied Tone
    • Keeps things interesting

Fluency

  • A lack of major stumbles
  • Correct punctuation and grammar
  • A natural flow of ideas
  • Clear enunciation

Facial Expressions

  • Friendly, warm, engaging, confident
  • In sync with the content of the speech
  • Varied communicative
  • Effective eye content

Humor/Entertainment

  • Purposeful inclusion of humor
    • “Lighter moments”
  • Try to sound natural while presenting your content

  • Confident and natural speaking posture
  • Above the waist gestures
    • Be sure that each of your gestures have a purpose!
  • Pre and Pose speech poise
  • Smooth transitional walks
  • Eye contact = confidence

  • Helpful previews and clinchers
  • Good transitions between different topics within speech
  • Logical internal organization
  • Insertion of helpful background info as appropriate

  • Good first impression
  • Motivates the audience to listen
  • Clearly states thesis (answer) and main arguments
  • Establish credibility right away
  • Word choices lead other people to make assumptions about you

Do-Not…

  • Stare at one person for the whole time
  • Look down at the floor, at the back wall, or at the ceiling much of the time

Do-Not…

  • Mess with your body, hair, clothes or accessories
  • Pace
  • Rock
  • Dance
  • Walk to close to someone in your audience

Gestures

Do-Not…

  • Have your hands in your pockets
  • Use repetitive gestures of any kind or keeping hand gestures under your waist
  • Keep your arms tied to your sides

Voice

Do-Not…

  • Speak too softly for most people to hear
  • Speak without vocal variation
  • Speak with an almost closed mouth

All of these elements will drastically improve your performance!

Practicing just a few of them could turn a 3 into a 2 which could be the difference needed to power

  1. Practice your piece multiple times with a different element in mind each run through
  2. Record yourself when doing so
  3. Practice, Practice, Practice!
