Cars

  • Nowadays we have more vehicles (cars) than in the past.

  • The majority of vehicles are powered by gasoline or diesel.

Cars

  • There are not enough fossil (oil).

  • Other energy sources are ethanol, biodiesel, compressed natural gas (CNG),electric batteries, and hydrogen.

Public transport

-Malta’s major public transports are buses and taxis. Malta offers high-quality taxi and bus services.

-Why is public transport important?

Public transport helps to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere

-All of our buses are either Euro 5 or Euro 6

What is Euro 5 and Euro 6?

Euro 5 is the name given to a set of limits for harmful exhaust emissions produced by virtually any vehicle powered by petrol or diesel engines.

Euro 6

CO: 0.50g/km

HC + NOx: 0.17g/km

NOx: 0.08g/km

PM: 0.005g/km

Euro5

CCO: 1.0g/km THC: 0.10g/km

NMHC: 0.068g/km

NOx: 0.06g/km

PM: 0.005g/km

Traffic in Malta

What causes traffic?

  • Traffic happens because there are too many vehicles on a motor way.
  • Traffic happens because of too many cars or car accidents.
  • Also traffic is the reason most people are late to school, work and interviews.

Traffic in Malta

  • Traffic can also make people get impatient, stressed and mad.

•There are some easy solution like riding a bike, car pooling and public transport.

•It produces a lot of CO2.

Consequences

  • Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Sadly, Malta has the second-highest increase in carbon dioxide emissions. The country registered an increase of 6.7 percent.

Pollution enters the Earth's atmosphere in several ways. Most air pollution is created by people, taking the form of emissions from factories, cars, planes etc.

Consequences

  •    Global Warming

Carbon dioxide emissions are also a major

contributor to global warming and account

for around 80 percent of all EU greenhouse gas emissions.

European 20-20-20 Targets

European policymakers introduced goals for the year 2020 in several different sectors.

  • 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions
  • 20% of EU energy from renewables
  • 20% improvement in energy efficiency, to increase energy efficiency to save 20% of EU energy consumption by 2020.

The 2020 energy goals are to have a:

Malta is two points short of it's 2020 renewable energy targets, having promised to reach a share of 10% by the end of this year.

Solutions to reduce the impact of fuel usage

  • Drive only when needed.
  • Make sure the gas cap is on tight.
  • Reduce weight in the vehicle

Solutions to reduce the impact of fuel usage

  • Conserve energy

By replacing fossil energy sources with clean, renewable fuels, the mortality rate in Europe could be reduced by 55 percent

  • Switched to electric- powered vehicles

  • Further investments

  • Develop new/improved technologies addressing environment and climate change
