Tara and I shared a lot with you on our webinar a few months back - Kode With Klossy’s mission, vision, impact. We don’t want restate that information here today but we do want to ground the rest of training in KWK’s core. Something about our organization brought you here today. For me, coming to Kode With Klossy was a combination of passions - I am a former STEM teacher, I care deeply about fostering passions in young people, and I specifically had experience being the only woman in the room in a number of math related activities in my life. We’d like you to take a moment to think about what brought you here to this organization and what brought you here today. Rather than sharing our impact by the numbers, we’d love to kick off this section of today by giving you a chance to hear directly from our scholars. Throughout the section of today as well, feel free to use the chat feature to chat in questions, concerns, noticings. We will pause throughout to answer pressing questions and will pause at the end for a bit of time to answer additional qusetions.

The idea here is to introduce 2020 scholars to alumni scholars who were in their shoes in prior summers. We want them to get a sense for the types of communities, skills and relationships that are able to be built over the course of camp, and to normalize any feelings of nervousness or anxiousness that might resonate with scholars on their first day in camp. SUMMER OF 2020 | OUR FIRST VIRTUAL OFFERING

We;re so glad you did choose to be here today. We are relying on you to bring our biggest and newest summer to life. At the end of the day, we are committed to providing incredible equitable learning experiences to as many young women as possible this summer, and we’re excited that we’ve been able to pivot quickly in the current climate to do so. This is Kode WIth Klossy’s virtual summer!

We want to give you a bit of context on how we’ve gotten to this moment. As I think most of you know, we opened our scholar applications at the very beginning of March with the intention of hosting around 50 camps in 27 cities around the country. About halfway through our applications, the implications of COVID 19 became clear and we knew we needed to pivot. We were still able to source thousands of scholar applicants in those original cities. Once our applications closed, we continued to be heads down working on building our first virtual offering, not quite sure in how many camps we would be need to offer that alternative. As time went on, it became clear that that would be the majority *and now will be all* of our summer. In an effort to make the opportunity available to as many young women as possible, we reopened our applications for 10 days specifically targeting recruiting for virtual camps. We more than doubled our original amount of scholar applications in that time. We know there is a huge appetite for virtual camps. We also allowed scholars anywhere to apply for virtual camp since we would no longer have geographical constraints. Here’s a bit of what we heard for scholars in our second round.

SCHOLAR APPLICATIONS

I have always been following Kode with Klossy, and from the beginning I wanted to be a part of it, I love the way the camps take place, with everyone being curious about building something, learning something new, being a part of a new family, but I wasn’t able to be a part of it. But today morning as a woke up and saw a mail regarding the VIRTUAL CAMP, of which I can also be a part, made me so EXCITED!!

In the current social distancing situation, all of my previous summer plans have been cancelled, so it would be wonderful to participate in your online camp and use my free time while at home in a productive way to acquire a new skill set

I live on the outskirts of Boston, making my commute over two hours, consisting of a ferry, two trains, and a walk. After attending camp, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, but the commute was a lot, and I stopped attending...When I received this email that you were doing an online camp I freaked out. This online format provides me the opportunity to finally attend camp and, learn computer science in my house.

SCHOLAR CORE COMPETENCIES

Curiosity/creativity: scholars who will find innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to problems. Creative applicants will bring unique perspectives and experiences

Community-mindedness: scholars who are team-players, who are eager to join a community of women in STEM. who demonstrate a desire to help others

Passionate/Motivated: leaders will join our community with the confidence to go after what they believe is right and to continue to use their voices to pursue their passions

We want to give you a sense of what we are looking for in our scholar applicants to give you a better sense of who your scholars will be. We assume no prior CS experience or exposure. We don’t ask for any TRANSCRIPTS, TEST SCORES, GPAs, etc… We simply ask 3 questions designed to flip our mission on its head and surface what scholars would most benefit from this program. This leads us to score applications on 3 core competencies.

We are finalizing this process now and will make offers to 1500 scholars, your future students early next week. We know the appetite for virtual camps is strong and this applicant pool is very strong. You can expect for sure some curious, creative, community minded passionate motivated students this summer and your job will be to harness those competencies to build skills, knowledge and community. So that brings us to the final playground for the summer of 2020. We’ll be … WALK THROUGH… It looks a bit different from our original plans in a few ways.

1. We are planning to award even more scholarships in a virtual setting.

2. We have hired additional instructor assistants - this is for a few reasons - we know bringing culture and community to life virtually will be challenging, in addition to supporting student needs and we really rely on IAs to do this so wanted to invest here; 2. Because of this we have decided that each camp will ideally have 3 IAs rather than 2 in the past. This will allow for a smaller student:teacher ratio and additional levels of support and 3.We wanted to really support this group of alums by making a large number of hires here as this is a group for whom important summer opportunities have disappeared and we want to really support them as alums of our program.

The number of instructors remains the same. The number of scholars per camp remains the same.

The one other key change is that while we will have camps serving the 27 core geographies we had announced in January we will also have camps tied to time zones that are not geographically fenced, allowing us the ability to serve a more diverse geographic footprint than ever before.

VIRTUAL CAMP | SNAPSHOT “Day in the Life”

Ok so how are you going to do that? What is the day going to look like? Im not sure about your current virtual set-ups but my understanding is there all pretty different. Here’s what our version looks like. Scholars will be engaged in learning from 9:45 - 3:15 daily with a real significant lunch break. Learning will happen in two big chunks - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. There will also be brain breaks in the middle of those two chunks to break them up along with some bathroom breaks and otherwise. We believe that this the maximum amount we can do synchronously. The day is still quite full for instructors but hopefully that is broken up a bit with various modes of work. We will talk a ton more in detail about this tomorrow - the first session is really focused on this tomorrow but wanted to give you a broad overview today so you can begin to envision your summer commitments. PAUSE.

We want to acknolwedge some logistical elements still to come your way as well. It may not be the most magical aspect of camp… but apart of logsistics is payroll so theres still some magic. First, many of you mentioned you may have shaky wifi (I hope you can hear us right now) , We are working on determining individual solutions for each of you and relatedly if there are any other resources we need to best execute virtual camp, we want to ensure you all get those ASAP. We may empower you to make these purchases yourself and then have them reimbursed. One thing to come is our specific reimbursement policy and an invitation to the platform on which you can access those, Concur. Additionally you will soon recieve information on how to sign up and setup your payroll information on ADP. I won’t bore everyone with the nitty gritty now, so we’ll get back to the actual magical parts about camp!
