Insomnia

  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

Causes

  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol reduces REM
  • Stress
  • Most pills not effective (suppress REM)

Instructions for Insomniacs

  • Lie down only when you feel sleepy
  • Don’t use bed for any activity other than sleeping
  • If after you are in bed and cannot sleep – go to a different room – return to bed when sleepy.
  • Get up at the same time every morning
  • Do not NAP during the day

Narcolepsy

  • A person falls instantly into sleep no matter what is going on in the environment

  • Sometimes includes collapsing
  • Might be genetic
  • Begin their sleep period with REM (drop right into REM sleep)
  • Best treated with medication

  • Breathing stops during sleep

  • Causes – male, overweight, enlarged tonsils
  • Most likely to affect overweight men
