“Good to Go” and/or Areas of Significant Progress

Need Support for Development in Areas Showing Small Progress and/or for Meeting Challenges

Instructional Practices

  • Pockets of exemplary 21st century instructional practice and use of tools in some schools.
  • Excellent professional development opportunities.
  • A K-12 instructional “greenhouse” is in place in American Canyon.
  • Coaching available at other district sites.
  • Echo & “4C” rubrics available and in use at some sites.
  • Aligning our practice to National Core Standards.
  • Increased understanding, use, and monitoring of authentic learning experiences and assessments.
  • District-wide frequent and appropriate use of PBL.
  • Instructional practices embedded in PBL that provide teachers with the tools to close achievement gaps.
  • Expanding and deepening our pockets of excellence.
  • A deeper use of technology, tools, and practices that address digital learners and track their progress.

Structures

  • NVUSD has committed a high-level district leadership position to shepherding this transition.
  • ACHS and NTHS built specifically for this purpose.
  • Many Schools transitioning to Block or Modified Block
  • Cloud infrastructure in place at 3 schools.
  • System and documents that ensure PLC time built into school day each week at some schools.
  • Strong supporting Board policy in place.
  • Principal evaluation and site goals aligned/unified.
  • Technology infrastructure, particularly as related to collecting and reporting outcomes in a 21st century classroom.
  • 1:1 Computer ratio is at the heart of 21st century learning and teaching. How to ensure facilities, PD systems, and budget priorities support this.
  • Redesign schedules, calendars, curriculum delivery, and use of time. Letting go of old structures.

Purpose

  • District taskforce developed plan for transformation.
  • Same 3 goals drive improvement across district.
  • Focus on data and common assessment lends itself to outcome-based transformation.
  • Communicating and integrating purpose into all aspects of district work is viewed as high priority.
  • Clarity and passion exists for some portion of stakeholders at all levels and in all buildings.
  • Even at the district level, the purpose and plan is not 100% clear nor receiving 100% commitment.
  • How to embed and align this transition throughout the district so that all oars are rowing in the same direction.
  • Developing a communication and participation plan that reaches out to a wide variety of students, parents, and teachers across the district.

Culture

  • NVUSD has strong ties to a significant segment of the business community who - in turn - have shown vision, leadership, and support for transformation.
  • Informational resources for communication plan readily available. Support from college and career destinations in communicating the “big picture”.
  • History of parent, student, & community partnerships.
  • Outside expertise and financial support opportunities.
  • Build city-wide/district-wide awareness of big picture.
  • How to communicate to teachers and – in some instances – principals, the validity and urgency of instructional redesign so they see it as the best vehicle for achieving mutually desired goals.
  • To achieve a broader and more active partnership with our students and parents in all of our district schools in achieving 21st century classrooms.
