Introductions
The UC Berkeley History Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) is one of five member sites of the California History-Social Science Project that provide professional development support to schools and districts around the state.
Phyllis Goldsmith and Jason Muñiz are former classroom teachers in the Bay Area who now work to support educators with developing their classroom practices, and provide professional development at districts and school sites.

Christian Vigil is a Social Studies teacher at Kennedy High School, located in South Richmond. He is one of the founders of the Kennedy High International Academy, now heading into its 2nd year. He is a graduate of San Diego State's Dual Language Education Program.

Building Effective Newcomer Teacher Teams
This session will focus on creating collaborative learning spaces to improve instruction and student outcomes. We will review the purposes of interdisciplinary teams and discuss how each supports multilingual learners.

Bentwood Union Schools
Hillary currently works as a TSA for English Learner Support in the Brentwood Union School District working with teachers and students grades TK-8. She previously taught 8th-grade Social Studies and ELD and is passionate about supporting the development of multilingual students as they work toward reclassification.
Adapting content instruction for newcomers in mainstream classrooms
This session will focus on strategies for adapting content instruction to meet the unique needs of newcomer English learners, particularly in mainstream classrooms with only a few newcomers. Participants will gain practical tools and learn about strategies to create an inclusive learning environment while addressing language barriers and ensuring academic success for all students.

Alicia Lobaco,
Fremont High School
Alicia Lobaco is an ELD teacher at Fremont High School in Oakland where she has taught for 18 years. She is one of the founders of NEST, the newcomer program Fremont, which now serves 300 students. She is interested in strategies to support SIFE students and create a sense of belonging in the classroom.
Systems and Routines for Newcomer Programs and Classes
This session will focus on creating systems and routines in newcomer programs and for individual classes. We will focus on routines for organization, common rules and procedures, and speaking and reading during class.

Laura Einhorn,
San Leandro High School
Laura Einhorn is a newcomer pathway teacher, ELD teacher, and the coordinator of the School of Language at San Leandro High School. She has taught high school and middle school students in the east bay for 15 years in ELD, social studies, English, health, and dance. She is an EdD candidate at Mills College, mom of 3, and partner to an amazing social justice educator.
Creating Common routines, procedures and strategies
Establishing a set of instructional routines supports newcomers’ language and content acquisition, and also makes your planning load so much easier! In this session, we will preview a set of instructional routines targeted at newcomer scholars that provide practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English.

Michelle Gonzalez-DeJesus,
Frick United Academy
This session will be led by Michelle Gonzalez de Jesus. Michelle has served as Assistant Principal Frick United Academy of Language in Oakland Unified, home to the largest Newcomer Population in the Middle School Network for the last 5 years. Prior to that she served as a founding teacher and co-lead of the NEST Program at Fremont High School for 14 years.
Models for cohorting students/master schedule
This section will focus on programming that serves Newcomer Students. We will look at different Newcomer program models and support models for staff.
