Warm Up

January is named after the Roman god, Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions. Janus has two heads- one looking to the past and one looking forward to the future.

January comes from the Latin word for door (ianua) since January is the door to the year.

In your notebook, write 2-3 sentences. What are you leaving behind? What are you bringing with you as you cross the threshold into 2015? What are you looking ahead to?

Social Class Determining Factors

  • Education
  • Income
  • Occupation
  • Wealth

A person’s position in society is a reflection of a unique combination of these factors. At first, a person's class is his/her parents' class. Later, a person’s class may change, but it is likely to resemble that of his/her parents…but not always.
