There’s an old adage that you don’t know what you don’t know. Student journalists gain a lot from having someone with experience to come to for advice, whether it’s feedback on clips or drafting new bylaws. It’s also a chance to expose more students to the niche of data journalism (editors, this is especially beneficial to you if you’re looking to hire down the road). Students who aren’t at schools with well-established programs may be missing out on a topic that interests them. Stop by the newsroom or reach out to the staff and let them know you’re a resource. Get to know the students there. Student newspapers have high turnover by nature, but by offering to do a workshop or speak with students semesterly, you can create a ripple effect for knowledge within a publication. This goes for high school publications, as well.
