• Welcome to Week 4 in Grade 5!
• We completed our first quiz in Math last week. Any absent students will makeup this assessment this week. It was 10 questions via Google Form, focusing on Multiplying Whole Numbers by Powers of 10: REVIEW LINK
• Our fifth grade school year began on Thursday, September 4th, 2025. Thank you for all of your help supporting your child to be on time and dressed in full uniform. As a friendly reminder, crocs are not allowed. In addition, navy and khaki bottoms are allowed only. Black leggings, grey sweatpants, etc. are not permitted. I will send emails daily to families when students are not in compliance with the school uniform. Thank you for your cooperation.
• Looking ahead: Back to School Night will take place on Monday, 9/29/25 from 6PM-7:30PM. There will be 2 sessions available to attend. I invite you to visit your child’s classroom and learn more about me and my expectations.
• Looking ahead: On 9/29/25, we will have an early dismissal day at 1:20PM.

Hi! My name is Miss Lisa Tambini, and I am ecstatic to be your child’s fifth grade homeroom teacher for the 2025-2026 school year at Edward J Patten Elementary School! This school year, I am teaching Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

I am a college undergraduate from Monmouth University located in West Long Branch, NJ with a dual major in English and Elementary Education. I knew I wanted to become a teacher at a very young age. My love for teaching continues to blossom every day! I am very thankful to have the opportunity to teach your child. I am entering my 9th year of teaching, and each school year I am reminded how much I truly love what I do! :)

This is how your child’s grade is calculated for each subject.

• Our school days take place from 8:35AM-3:00PM.
• I complete your child’s attendance every day online in the morning. If a child enters my classroom after 8:45AM, this is considered a tardy/late.
• Each child has his/her own desk in the classroom.
• All class supplies are provided.
• We rotate Science and Social Studies every marking period. We will learn Social Studies in MP1.
• Our special is Period 1 from 8:50AM-9:35AM.
• Homeroom takes place from 8:35AM-8:50AM. This provides us 15 minutes only to unpack, eat breakfast, and complete morning meeting. It is very important that your child arrives to school on time please.
• On Tuesdays and Fridays, please ensure your child wears sneakers for Physical Education.
• On Tuesdays, our special rotates during Period 2 between Media and Technology.
• On Tuesdays, we have two specials: Physical Education and Media (or Technology)

This week, we are learning:

​

• Math: Students multiply two- and three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers by using the area model. They relate the model to the standard algorithm and discuss which strategy is most efficient. Students explore how naming one factor as the unit affects the number of partial products shown in the standard algorithm.

​

• Reading: We are organizing our Class Library, and students are selecting “just right” books for themselves. We will begin to discuss the importance of reading and begin to take ownership in our reading logs. Students will then have the opportunity to bring books home to read and return to class on a weekly basis.

​

• Science: Science will take place in Marking Periods 2 and 3.

​

• Social Studies: Social Studies will take place in Marking Periods 1 and 4. Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from 9/15 to 10/15. We will learn about the customs and traditions in Hispanic Heritage Month in class through interactive lessons like NEWSELA and EDPUZZLES.

​

• Writing: Students will use point of view so they can tell more specific details and images of their story. They know they have it when they can highlight three places in their narrative where they have added specific details.

​

• Students are invited to bring water bottles or tumblers to class to refill with water as the day progresses.
• There are 0 hoodies allowed in class during the instructional day.
• Crocs are not allowed.
• Gum chewing is not allowed.
• Cell phones need to stay in students’ backpacks during the instructional day.
