Safe Routes to School

Safe Routes to School - 2016 and 2018 Bond Funds

• Canyon Vista Middle School - new crosswalk and bike safety improvements completed
• Anderson Mill, Purple Sage, and Grisham completed
• Laurel Mountain Elementary anticipated completion late 2026
• Elsa England and Pearson Ranch - new stoplight completed

RRISD Bus Routes

Round Rock ISD has paused proposed bus service changes for 2026–27 and will form a transportation engagement committee, along with a feedback form for families to share safety concerns.

Public safety, walkability, and transit remain top priorities. While City budget constraints and bond uncertainty limit what we can fund, we are working with RRISD, Travis and Williamson Counties, and state partners to improve student safety. Updates will be shared in the D6 newsletter.

Elementary Programs

Earth School : Watershed Protection Department

• Earth School leads 5th graders outside, on school grounds, for a hands-on presentation about Austin's watersheds, the Edwards Aquifer, water quality, pollution prevention, and flood safety. The program is aligned with state standards and offered to schools in Austin for FREE by Austin Watershed Protection.

Earth Camp: Watershed Protection Department - Title 1 Schools

• Students spend four school days at outdoor sites participating in hands-on science with Watershed Protection's youth educators.

Austin Energy Class Presentations

• Power Town — This presentation is designed to teach children basic electrical safety concepts using a model of a town.
• Lightning Lab — Lightning Lab is a fun and interactive classroom presentation for students 2nd-12th grades where students learn the basic science behind electricity.

Clean Creek Program - Grades 3-8

• Free program consisting of engaging, science-based activities. Participating schools will receive two in-class presentations, followed by a field trip and instruction for local service project opportunities.

E-Smart Kids

• Free curriculum materials provided by Austin Energy. Becoming e-SMART means learning about electricity and how to use it safely and wisely. Worksheets, games, and videos for all ages.

Science Fair

Greater Austin Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GARSEF)

• One of Texas’s largest regional science fairs with almost 3,000 students from 3rd through 12th grade.
• Encourages and rewards innovative student research and provides scientists, engineers and other professionals a chance to volunteer in the community.

• Block Parties - build community and get to know your neighbors.
• Healthy Streets - provide space for people to walk, bike, roll, exercise and build community within the public right-of-way
• Play Streets - Play Streets provide space for children and adults alike to gather and play in a local street
• Shared Streets - streets without sidewalks safer and more comfortable for walking, bicycling, and rolling.
