P&T COMPETITION

What is it?

    • Promote safe, effective, and cost-effective drug therapy
    • Develop policies regarding drug evaluation, selection, and utilization
    • Educate practitioners on drugs and appropriate drug utilization
    • Any organization that maintains a drug formulary utilizes a P&T Committee
    • Hospitals, Health Plans, Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and VA

Why participate?

    • First-hand experience real world formulary management
    • Determine the best treatment outcomes for a patient population
    • Utilize disease state guidelines to determine safety & efficacy of a drug
    • Understand how to research data for health economics outcomes
    • Work with evidence-based medicine to determine what is optimal for a patient population
    • Ensure that patients can get the best possible treatment while controlling cost.

What will you do?

    • Receive a case study with an assigned drug and disease state(s), manufacturer’s dossier, monograph template, and a given health system formulary
    • Perform independent research
    • Prepare a P&T Committee monograph
    • Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation for your formulary decision

P&T COMPETITION

Requirements?

    • AT LEAST TWO out of four competing team members must attend:
      • P&T Lecture Series
      • After-Hours Sessions
    • Create a drug monograph
    • Formulary Decision presentation to a panel of judges
      • Set up (5 min), Presentation (20-30 min), Q&A (~20 min), Breakdown (5 min)

Why Compete?

    • Gain experience in the process to get a drug on a formulary
    • More competitive for Internships, Fellowships, and Residencies
    • Apply Drug Information searching to real world situations
    • Work on economic analysis, cost-effectiveness studies, and budget impact modeling
    • Assess clinical studies and therapeutic outcomes
    • Learn managed care decision process

OPTIONAL 3 hours of graded 380/390 elective credit available for Spring 2027

Disclaimer: Can only receive a maximum of 6 hours for this competition during 4 years. Can compete without receiving credit.
