P&T COMPETITION

What is it?

Promote safe, effective, and cost-effective drug therapy
Develop policies regarding drug evaluation, selection, and utilization
Educate practitioners on drugs and appropriate drug utilization
Any organization that maintains a drug formulary utilizes a P&T Committee
Hospitals, Health Plans, Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and VA

Why participate?

First-hand experience real world formulary management
Determine the best treatment outcomes for a patient population
Utilize disease state guidelines to determine safety & efficacy of a drug
Understand how to research data for health economics outcomes
Work with evidence-based medicine to determine what is optimal for a patient population
Ensure that patients can get the best possible treatment while controlling cost.

What will you do?

Receive a case study with an assigned drug and disease state(s), manufacturer’s dossier, monograph template, and a given health system formulary
Perform independent research
Prepare a P&T Committee monograph
Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation for your formulary decision

NETWORKING EVENTS

To transition a little bit here, one of the benefits of getting involved with AMCP is networking, and that includes not only interacting with industry professionals but also your fellow peers that have similar career aspirations.

So toward that experience one of the things we’ve done for a few years now is the Student Alumni Mentoring Initiative, or SAMI, which is an opportunity to have a one-on-one connection with a pharmacist in managed care, industry, specialty, or consulting. One of the things we pride ourselves on as an organization is having an alumni network that’s very strong and has supported students for years. For example, our President-elect, Bajeel, participated in it the past year and was able to practice her interviewing skills and gain application advice through her mentor, which helped her land an internship at J&J this past summer!

One of our other events that we typically do once a semester is an Alumni Social. Typically it’s at a brewery, so it’s a more of a relaxed social event where you have the chance to meet multiple alumni at once and talk to them in a lower stakes environment. I don’t believe a date has been officially set for yet but that’s always one of my favorite events and I would love to see as many people there as possible.

OPPORTUNITIES AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL

AMCP National also offers a ton of opportunities beyond conferences.

They offer 10-week paid internships during the summer, many of which are in partnership with pharma companies, which can give you hands-on experience, direct mentorship from industry professionals, and a chance to develop some professional skills. Many of these internships culminate in a Capstone Project, which you end up getting to present at Nexus.

They do also offer a few scholarships, including the HBCU Travel Award Grant and the Cathy A. Carroll Scholarship

For those interested in seeing managed care and industry in action, there's also the Leo Pharma–Gilead Student Pharmacy Program, which offers site visits and networking with those companies.

If you want to be involved in the organization itself at the national level, you can apply for the Student Pharmacists Committee, or SPC — and AMCP also runs interactive webinars throughout the year to keep you updated on trends in the field.

If you’re interested in any of these things there’s plenty of information on the AMCP website about them or feel free to reach out to anyone on eboard and we can try to point you in the right direction.
