ECOSYSTEMS

  • Ecosystems are the networks of interactions that link the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) elements of the environment together

BIOTIC ELEMENTS

  • biotic elements of an ecosystem are any living components
    • organisms such as
      • plants
      • animals
      • fungi
      • micro-organisms
        • bacteria
        • protozoa

VOCABULARY

  • Individual organisms that can mate and produce more of the same kind of organisms are called a species
    • all of the members of a species in an area are called a population
      • a group of populations that live in the same area are called a community

ABIOTIC ELEMENTS

  • Abiotic elements are any non-living components of an ecosystem
      • sunlight
      • air
      • snow
      • sand dunes
      • rock

1) SUN : The Needs of Living Things

  • most of the energy that makes life possible on Earth comes from the sun
  • plants capture the sun’s energy and undergo photosynthesis to make their own food in the form of sugars
  • animals obtain energy indirectly from sunlight because:
    • some animals eat the plants (herbivores)
    • animals that eat the herbivores (carnivores)
    • animals that eat both plants and animals (omnivores)

2) AIR : The Needs of Living Things

  • air is made up of many gases including:
    • oxygen (O2)
    • carbon dioxide (CO2)
    • nitrogen (N2)

  • plants absorb the carbon dioxide that they need for photosynthesis and produce oxygen as a waste product
  • the oxygen produced by plants is absorbed by animals

3) WATER : The Needs of Living Things

  • all organisms need water to survive and perform bodily functions
  • some organisms live in water and can absorb oxygen from it

4) FOOD : The Needs of Living Things

  • food provides organisms with nutrients (substances that organisms need to grow and maintain their bodies)
    • proteins
    • starches
    • vitamins
    • minerals

5) IDEAL TEMPERATURE RANGE

  • all organisms have a range of temperatures they can tolerate and an ideal range somewhere in the middle
