Problem of Practice

As we work in the area of post-secondary transition we found the need for emphasis on skills to be utilized within the classroom as well as skills to be taken forward into the workforce. This projects focus is on soft skills and the implementation of them within the classroom and beyond. The incorporation of soft skills practice as well as appropriate employment soft skills to increase the success of students.

Soft Skills

• Soft Skills are non-technical skills that relate to how you work.
• Some Soft Skills examples include:

-interact with colleagues

-solve problems

-manage your work

Time Management

• Encourage students to use a planner
• Help students to create a schedule
• Help students break down large tasks into more manageable tasks
• Have students estimate the time it will take to do a task and then assess once complete

Networking

• Have students participate in group activities/lessons with direct responsibilities
• Change seating arrangements in your classroom to help students develop new relationships
• Encourage students to branch out to different interest groups

Teamwork

• Assign group work that encourages students to work together
• Create games for your students to play that allows them to have fun working together (ex: scavenger hunt, Deserted Island)
• Encourage students to participate in team sports/activities

Thinking

• Present students will bell ringers that do not have definite answers and allows the student to think on a broader platform
• Give students the options to expand their thinking in their own process with little to no parameters

Resolution

• Present students with conflictual situations and have them discuss how they would deal with that situation
• Analyze and build upon how they dealt with that situation, and establish ways to improve

Outcomes Moving Forward

• Implement soft skills within all classrooms: vo-tech, regular education, resource, etc.
• Educate students on soft skills and their utilization
• Provide opportunities for students to practice this skills in all settings for mastery
