Non-university approved Subjects (unit standards)

Non-university-approved subjects offer alternative learning.

They do not count toward university credits, but they can still provide practical skills and personal growth opportunities within the Vocational and Workforce Pathways.

University-approved subjects are essential for those aiming for higher education.

These courses meet specific criteria and ensure academic readiness for university challenges.

COMPULSORY

In year 11 you will experience learning in a range of curriculum areas:

  • English and Maths are compulsory
  • You must choose another four subjects for a total of six.
  • You will be asked to state your preferences for your remaining options.
  • Some courses may be available as a semester.
  • Kotui Ako subjects (Online classes) are available for clashes or subjects we don't offer at OC
  • Applications for KA will be on the Course Selection page

KOTUI AKO (Online Learning Community)

(Formerly known as HabourNet)

Kotui Ako is available for students:

  • If the subject is not available
  • Have previously taken a Kotui Ako (previously Harbournet) subject.
  • Have a class on their timetable and they require the subject for their pathway
  • Looking at having more independent learning time.
  • Due to the approval process, we kindly ask you to choose a sixth subject as a temporary backup. Your timetable will be updated once your initial subject request has been officially approved.

Students::

  • Must be organised
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Communicate with the teacher on a regular basis
  • Attend the once-a-week online lesson every time.
  • Might miss a subject block once a week due to the set time of the teacher.
