“Who can tell me how the word ‘floss’ is like the words in the three columns?” Help children see that the four similarities discussed in the previous slide. Explain that this word also contains the letters f, l and s, which are the three letters that double at the end of floss words.

Floss Rule
ff ll ss
off fill pass
stuff shell boss
sniff doll less
We’re going to learn a new rule today that explains how to spell words like these. This rule tells us that when a one syllable root word has a short vowel sound followed by the sound /f/,/l/, or /s/, those sounds are usually spelled ‘ff,’ll’ or ‘ss’. We call words that follow this rule, ‘floss words.’

Let’s Practice!!
The trick is learning to recognize floss words, so let’s practice. I’ll say a word, and then you tell me if you think it is a floss word. I’ll put in on the board and we’ll check it. Review the Floss Rule and Practice how to recognize the words that follow this rule. Use marking tool to identify coding.

Some words don’t follow the rules!
Some words might sound like floss words, but they don’t follow the floss rule. Look at the word ‘bus’, This word should be spelled with two s’s, but it’s spelled with only one. Words like ‘bus’ are known as ‘irregular spelling words.’ Irregular means that they don’t follow the spelling rules we’ve been learning.
