Parents and Caregivers, thank you for taking the time to read this handbook.

​

Welcome to Flagg Street School! Our school community seeks to foster a warm and welcoming environment where each child and adult feels a strong sense of belonging. Our staff are dedicated professionals who strive for academic excellence for your children. I am honored to work as principal of this wonderful school community.

At Flagg Street School, we work tirelessly to meet the needs of each learner. We will ensure that academic, social, and emotional needs are addressed daily. Along with parents and families, we work as a coordinated team to empower independent, intelligent, thoughtful learners to meet and exceed grade level expectations. We know from experience that setting high standards raises expectations and produces high-quality efforts.

Throughout the year KINDNESS will always be a focus of our students’ social/emotional learning. We also will highlight the traits that align with the Worcester Public Schools’. Vision of a Learner. The dispositions are Engaged Community Member, Curious Learner, Problem Solver, Empowered Individual, and Effective Communicator. Our students take a daily kindness pledge and we love to celebrate each other’s successes. We are proud of the many accomplishments of our students, staff members, and families

Art on Flagg Street School

Kindness Pledge

Artists Ramiro Davaro-Comas, Grace Lang and Below Key, who are all based out of New York, teamed up on a large, fantastical mural that feels like a missing scene out of "Where the Wild Things Are." Depicting two lions, the piece is a perfect blend of Lang’s macabre style, Key’s classic graffiti and Davaro-Comas’ fantastical characters.The artists decided on the lion theme for two reasons — to represent the school via its mascot and to remember Worcester firefighter Lt. Jay Lyons who died battling a fire in 1999.Davaro-Comas grew up in Worcester after his family moved there from Buenos Aires. “I went to school here, took classes at the art museum, and I am so thrilled to bring some colorful murals to the community,” he said. https://www.wbur.org/news/2018/09/11/street-art-worcester-pow-wow

CZR PRZ (Caesar Perez) is a Chicago Native with over 20 years of experience as a street-artist, illustrator, painter, designer, and installation artist. He is mostly known for his street art and large scale public murals

Each month at Flagg Street School, teachers choose students who exemplify KINDNESS and CHARACTER. Flagg Students are rewarded with a certificate, a “Shout Out” photo on our front bulletin board, and a special celebration with other Flagg students! One student is chosen for kindness and the other will be chosen for the Vision of a Learner trait of the month.

Arrival:

Arrival at Flagg Street School is from 8:00am - 8:25am. At 8:20, classes line up and walk into the building.

Starting at 8:25 am, please bring your child to the main doors. After 8:30 am, students are marked tardy.

In order to ensure SAFETY for all, please adhere to the following processes:

Drop off by Vehicle:

    • Please use the main driveway
    • Pull all the way up to the marker to be greeted
    • Please do NOT get out of your vehicle
    • Students MUST exit from the right side (passenger side) of the vehicle next to the sidewalk.
    • Please stay in line. DO NOT pass any cars.
    • When the bus is dropping students off, please do NOT pass the bus and wait until the bus exits.
    • Please remember RIGHT TURNS ONLY at the top of the driveway between 8:00-8:45.
  • Walking:
    • Drop off occurs at the following locations by grade level:
      • Kindergarten and 1st Grade → Outside their classroom door, near the rear playground
      • Grades 2 and 3 → Outside Door
        • These are the white doors in the middle of the back of the building.
      • Grades 4-6 → Outside Door
        • This is the green door on the back of the building by the pathway to St. Paul Drive.

If it is raining/inclement weather, please bring your child to the front doors. There may not be staff to greet your child at the other doors.

Bus:

  • Daily Bus Students:
    • Bus routes are provided to families before the 1st day of school each year! They are also on the WooEdu portal!
    • Please use the Versatrans My Stop App to track your child’s bus!

  • Bus Expectations:
    • Transportation forms will be sent. ALL parents are asked to sign and return this document. Even if students do not regularly ride a bus, field trips often require transportation by bus.
    • Safety and positive bus behavioral expectations are for day to day bus use as well as for field trips.

Parking:

If you plan to park and walk your child to any door please make sure you are on a street and not in the school driveway or staff parking area.

When parking on any street in the neighborhood please do not block driveways or walkways, and obey any posted signs.

Please be mindful that St. Paul Ave is a public street and cars must be appropriately parked along the sides, and not blocking the entrance to the schools walkway.

Dismissal:

Dismissal at Flagg Street School begins at 2:25pm and ends at 2:30 pm. Kindly arrive to pick up your child by 2:30 pm each day, and call the office in the case of an emergency.

PLEASE, no parking in the driveway during arrival or dismissal times.

If picking up by:

  • Walking:
    • Pick up occurs at the following locations by grade level:
      • Kindergarten and 1st Grade → Outside their classroom doors
      • Grade 2 → Outside Door . These are the white doors in the middle of the back side of the building by the basketball court.
      • Grades 3-6 → In the front of the school building, on the large grassy area by Flagg Street.
  • Bus:
    • Buses arrive and pick up students through the main driveway.
      • *Please do not drive into the main driveway for dismissal to avoid holding up the buses*
    • Bus routes are provided to families before the 1st day of school each year! They are also on the WooEdu portal!
    • Please use the Versatrans My Stop App to track your child’s bus!
    • Please note: Students are not allowed to ride another bus. Students can only ride on their assigned bus.

Dismissal Changes

  • If your child is going home a different way, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher and the main office to let them know. The preferred way to do so is to send in a note that morning or contact the office as early in the school day as possible 508-799-3522. Please know that teachers do not always have time to check emails in the afternoon so do not solely rely on that form of communication if your plan changed late in the school day. If the JCC is closed, also inform your teacher how your child will be going home.

It is appreciated when a parent informs the classroom teacher and the main office when your child will be absent, tardy or dismissed. Please call 508-799-3522, email the teacher(s), or communicate through ParentSquare.

School, Classroom and Safety Protocols

Birthdays:

  • We enjoy sharing in the joy of birthdays. Unfortunately, due to food allergies, students are asked not to bring food for birthday celebrations. Alternative celebrations can be a donation of a game to the class, sending in a small non food item for each student, or just enjoying classmates singing the birthday song!
  • Students may share birthday invitations with classmates if they are inviting the entire class. We do not allow invitations to be handed out to select students in a class.

Dogs: Although we know the value of pets, we ask that dogs are left at home. Pets are not allowed on school grounds during arrival and dismissal times. Please refrain from using the fenced in playground during and after school hours.

Allergies: Due to students with known allergies and the possibility of students having unknown allergies, we do not allow outside food to be brought into school to share with students.

School Grounds During School Hours: During the school day, the playground is for school use only. For safety reasons, we ask that families who wish to use the playground or walk the grounds do so during non school hours.

Breakfast, Lunch, Recess, and Snack Policy

Breakfast:

  • All students have access to free school breakfast.
  • Please inform your child’s classroom teacher if you do NOT want your child to have a school breakfast.

Lunch:

  • All students have access to free school lunch.
  • There are allergy/ nut free tables for any student with allergies.
    • Please do not send your child with any food containing any kind of nuts if they sit at this table.
  • Please inform your child’s classroom teacher if you do NOT want your child to have a school lunch.

Snack:

  • Parents are encouraged to send a daily snack with your students(s)
  • Food eaten outside of lunchtime must be nut free.
  • Snacks are sometimes eaten in the classroom so the safety of peers with allergies is of utmost importance

  • All students have a device for daily use
  • Kindergarteners have iPads, and grades 1-6 use Chromebooks. The District set the following guidelines:
    • Grades K-3 → Devices will remain in the building at all times.

Cell Phone & Smart Watches

Consistent with the WPS Cell Phone use policy Flagg Street School wants to ensure the safe and appropriate handling of phones and watches during the school day.

CELL Phones:

If your child brings a cell phone to school, we ask that it is held by the classroom teacher in a secure location within the classroom until dismissal.

Students should keep phones on silent or use until they have exited the building.

In the event of an emergency, the classroom teachers have been asked to take the cell phones and may return to students when necessary.

SMART Watches:

We ask that parents do not communicate with their students via smart watches or phone texts during the school day. Please contact the office if you need to communicate a change in dismissal etc. These devices should be on school mode during the school day.
