Imperialism Synthesis and Conclusions
2nd period photos
and thoughts
Explanation by Ryan, Anna, Alexandra, and Jackie
Imperialism is defined as when a stronger country conquers and takes over a weaker already inhabited country. Therefore, we decided to visually depict this with a stronger, more authoritative, looking figure standing above two weaker people. This represents a country imperializing other countries. Overall, we took the direct definition of imperialism and put it into an image or tableaux.
Explanation by Fiona, Taylor, Matt, and Jordan
The tree represents imperialism because the tree isn’t depending on anything but itself. A country that is not imperialized anymore is allowed to grow freely by itself, compared to a country being imperialized which wants to be independent but can’t.
Explanation by Ryan, Jose, Darin and Ellie
We decided to represent imperialism by having Jose (the Imperializer) stand over Ryan (the Imperialized) threateningly. This is because imperialism is described as a stronger country (Jose) taking over a weaker country (Ryan).
Explanation by Zack, Thomas, Idy and Sabrina
The leaves represent people and the water is blood. It represents the bloodshed that can come from imperialism. The water also represents the overtaken country and the ground the overtaking country. The darker colored leaves represent the violent protestors and the lighter colored leaves represent the non-violent protestors.
Explanation by Julia, Ella, Lizeth,Jonatas
Our picture represents imperialism because America was formerly inhabited by the Native Americans before other countries invaded and tried to convert the natives to their religion and culture.
Explanation by
Our picture represents the three ways of responding to imperialism. The first way is acceptance, the second way is violence, and the third way is non-violence.
Explanation by Bailey, Mara, Jorge, and Janel
We have someone standing on the balcony to show that they are looking down on the weaker person. This represents the strong countries looking down on the weak countries as if they are trash (like in the background). They weaker person is hiding because she’s scared and feels helpless (as if accepting the imperialism.)
3rd period photos
and thoughts
Explanation by Jonathan, Wesley, Vanesa, and Alejandra
In the picture Wesley represents a country that has greater power than Vanesa another weaker country. Wesley putting his foot on Vanesa showing that he suppresses her and that he is greater than her and shows the control the country has over the other.
Explanation by Lucas, Lauren, Jared, Joey
Our picture shows how a superior country can conquer a country by killing many people and then claiming their land. In this photo, Lucas and Joey are claiming a “country” by killing a native with the British flag and placing it in him. The flag represents our country and Joey and Lucas represent the British soldiers that conquer the country.
Explanation by Eric, Katia, Harry , Margaret
Our picture shows all the different ways to react to imperialism. In the picture, Katia represents the imperializing country and Eric, Harry, and Margaret represent the ways to react. Harry represents violence by holding up finger guns. Margaret represents non violence by holding up peace signs. Eric represents acceptance by being in a neutral position and having a neutral expression.
Explanation by Emmett, Gabe, Nick, and Sofia
We portrayed a peaceful protester and then showed a police officer, representing the powerful country doing the imperializing. The police officer was kicking the person sitting down, representing the weaker country being imperialized, while the protester is reacting with non-violence, as he is not letting him beat him but is not retaliating violently.
Explanation by: Ava, Brandon, Cody, Hunter
In our picture we decided to have people looking up at a flag with their hands over their hearts. This is to symbolize when a country imperializes another country and forces their religion and customs onto the people.
Explanation by: Maxine, Amir, Andrew, Savannah
Amir is representing the imperialist country and Maxine is representing the imperialized country. Amir is on higher ground because he is representing the more powerful country at the time. Maxine is on her knees, because she is representing the country that is being under the more powerful one.
Explanation: Brody, Jeremy, Jarrett
In our picture the bigger country (Jeremy) is pointing down on the smaller country (Jarrett). He is in the same spot as all the other trash because the bigger country treats them as trash. That is what imperial countries do in real life, treat the natives like trash
5th period photos
and thoughts
Explanation: Lauren, Sue, Camryn, and Maya
In our picture, Sue represents the country and person being imperialized. Lauren and Maya represent the more powerful countries and how they punish whoever tries to fight for their independence. This shows how superior countries unfairly take advantage of countries that can benefit them in any way.
Explanation by Maryanne, Max, Santana and Nina
This image shows the different aspects of imperialism. Santana represents a powerful European country that has taken over a much less powerful country. Maryanne and Max represent two different ways to react to imperialism. Maryanne is being submissive and allowing imperialism to happen, while Max is rebelling against imperialism Santana.
Explanation by Margot and Maddy
In our picture, we decided to represent two countries, both fighting over a piece of land to gain power. This symbolizes the beginning of Imperialism and how pompous European countries believed they had the right and authority to take over weak countries and extract their richness and resources.
Explanation by-Natalie M, Ryan D, Sendy M, Asia W
Our photo shows the different levels of rankings. The Europeans didn’t care whose land they were taking over, they just wanted the land for money and resources. This shows imperialism because the imperialists didn’t have any regard for the other countrie and just cared about themselves.
Explanation by Claudia, Melody, Noah
In our photo, Melody represents the citizens because she is sitting on the floor next to a trashcan and Noah (representing a leader) is throwing trash at her instead of the trashcan because that’s how the citizens were being treated, like trash.
7th period photos
and thoughts
Explanation by Sophia, Kyle, Solana & Tommy
For our tableaux, we had two people representing citizens who are picketing and supporting nonviolent protesting (Kyle and Tommy). Then, we have two soldiers who are controlling the two people and threatening to shoot them, because the citizens are under their countries rule. (Sophia and Solana)
Explanation by Erin, Connor, Angus and CJ
Our picture represents a country sticking its flag in the land to claim it and leaving the native people in poor conditions caused by their presences in that new land.
Explanation by Dinh, Ben and Tal
Our picture shows a beautiful tree with flowers. The tree is getting its flowers plucked by a foreigner (without its consent, of course). This expresses imperialism because it’s showing people taking what they want from others without their consent. Sometimes, the country is beautiful, and the imperializer ruins the country’s beauty, similar to how the tree, if all of its flowers got plucked, would be ruined.
Explanation by Brooklyn, Olivia, Brend, Nelson
The two flowers are like two separate countries. As the red flower grows, it takes away nutrients from the white one. Even though you can’t see it in the picture, the white one is dying and so the bigger, red flower takes resources away from the white one to get stronger and more healthy.
Explanation by Jaxon, Nat, and Zinn
Jaxon is shoving Nat off his bench :( It shows imperialism because people who imperialize take control of property (land) and the people who live there. Poor Nat is being thrown off his Bench by Jaxon, the imperializer (Zinn is Nat’s guardian angel, just there to make sure he doesn’t fall and die)
Explanation by: Vanessa, Taylor,
Giselle, ChanChan
In our picture, it shows two people, representing 2 countries, fighting over the resources in the country. The guy in the back represents the country that is being taken over; it has no say in what is happening to the country. (Note: The guy sitting in the back is Jonathan Wee; aka: the country being fought over)
Explanation by Alyssa, Max, Jaime, Alexis
This picture shows two countries fighting over resources. The stronger country, played by Alexis, is pushing the weaker country, Jaime, out of the way, claiming the resource for herself. The weaker country still needs the resource and is put out because the stronger country just takes over places that have good resources, not caring for the natives.
