Hope to an

8 year old

11 of 39

We have forgotten who we are.

And I refuse to believe that

Things like ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, ‘ike kupuna and mo‘olelo

Really matters

I realize this may be a surprise but

‘Āina aloha is the key

Is a joke and

I’ll take what is mine

So a generation from now I will tell my keiki

There are more important things in life

Money

Is more important than

Culture

And I tell you this

I ka wā kahiko

The ‘ohana was the central unit

but this will not be true in my era

Experts tell me

In a generation’s time, most of our native plants and animals will be all but gone.

Our language will be useless, dead.

I do not concede that

I will live in a Hawai‘i of my own making

In the future

Environmental destruction and financial gain will be the norm

No longer can it be said that

My people and I care about this ‘āina

It will be evident that

Our people really are just stupid and lazy

It is foolish to presume that

There is hope.

We have forgotten who we are.
