This Week in Third Grade - Week of August 11th
Important Dates
August 11: First Day of School!
September 7: Labor Day - no school
Students of the Week:
This week we want to celebrate everyone in our classes! We are looking forward to a wonderful week of learning and building our classroom family!
Reading: This week we are enjoying back to school read alouds and activities.
Phonics: We are reviewing second grade skills.
Writing: We are working on writing activities about our summer and the upcoming school year.
Math: We are exploring what math is and math concepts.
Science/Social Studies: We are working on team building activities to build a classroom community.

This Week in Third Grade- Week of August 17th
Important Dates
Students of the Week:
River and Graceyn
Reading: Students will learn about character traits and how characters develop throughout the plot. Students will also learn about identifying the theme of a story.
Phonics: This week we will be learning about short vowel sounds in multisyllabic words. This year students will be assessed with 10 spelling words. 5 words will be known and follow the phonics pattern we are learning. The other 5 “unknown” words will follow the pattern we are learning.
Known spelling words: magnet, basket, finish, solid, frozen
Writing: Students will learn about narrative writing and begin planning their first narrative.
Grammar: This week students will be learning about capitalization and proper nouns. Students will be assessed using two dictation sentences at the end of the spelling quiz.
Math: This week we will be learning about place value and word forms with 6 digit numbers. Later in the week, we will learn about rounding 3 digit numbers. Students will have a quiz on place value and number forms on Tuesday. Students will have a math homework sheet on Monday and Thursday.
Science: Students will be learning and exploring force and motion.

This Week in Third Grade- Week of August 24th
Important Dates
Students of the Week:
Roman and Levi
Reading: Students will continue to learn about how characters develop throughout the plot. Students will also learn about figurative language this week. We will have a reading quiz on Thursday.
Phonics: This week we will be learning about long vowel sounds in multisyllabic words. This year students will be assessed with 10 spelling words. 5 words will be known and follow the phonics pattern we are learning. The other 5 “unknown” words will follow the pattern we are learning.
Known spelling words: brave, mane, invite, stone, include
Writing: Students will continue to draft their narratives and begin editing/revising their writing.
Grammar: This week students will be learning about using quotation marks and commas.
Math: This week we will be continuing to learn about rounding. On Wednesday we will have a quiz. We will then move to learning about estimation and addition with and without regrouping. Students will have a math homework sheet on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Science: Students will begin learning about magnets.

This Week in Third Grade - August 31
Important Dates
Students of the Week:
Emma and Jacob
Reading: We are continuing working on literary elements and focusing on character perspectives and the theme (lesson) of the story. We will take our reading test on Friday.
Phonics: We will be working on vowel teams with the long a and long e sounds in multisyllabic words. We will have our spelling test on Friday.
Known spelling words: sailboat, cheaper, maybe, treatment, field
Writing: We will finish our narrative stories by editing and then beginning to publish out work. We will celebrate all the kids hard work with a publishing party on Friday.
Math: We will continue learning strategies to add within 1,000. We will also be taking the Math Test Part A on Thursday.
Science/Social Studies: We will finish our science unit this week with magnets and take our first science test on Friday.

Reading: We are continuing working on literary elements and focusing on character development and summarizing. We will take a reading quiz on Thursday and begin poetry on Friday.
Phonics: We will be working on the long i sound in multisyllabic words. We will have our spelling test on Friday.
Known spelling words: slight, pie, bright, drying, myself
Writing: We will edit and revise our narrative letters this week to our pen pals.
Math: We will continue adding and subtracting within 1,000 and will begin 2 step word problems. We will have homework Monday and Thursday.We will have a quiz Friday.
Science/Social Studies: We will continue our new social studies units on maps. We will have a quiz on Friday.

This Week in Third Grade- September 21st
Important Dates
Students of the Week:
Zavier and Brinley
Reading: We will finish our module by focusing on point of view and visualization by using text evidence. We will have our Unit 2 Test on Friday.
Phonics: We will be working on combining our short vowel and long vowel patterns. We will have our spelling test on Friday.
Known spelling words: painting, leader, chosen, humid, vacant
Writing: We will finish our narrative letters to our pen pals and celebrate on Wednesday by reading our letters to our pen pals from the other 3rd grade class.
Math: We will finish our unit with number patterns and will take our Unit 2 Part B Test on Wednesday. We will then begin with arrays to help with multiplication. Homework will come home Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week.
Science/Social Studies: We will continue our social studies unit on maps and will work to identify regions and landforms. There will be a U.S. regions test on Tuesday.
September 25: Book Fair begins - signed forms must be returned for student to shop.
September 25: PTA movie night at 6:00pm

Important Dates
Students of the Week:
Wyatt and James
Reading: We will begin our next reading module on informational texts. We will be focussing on central idea and text features.
Phonics: We will be working on 3 letter blends (spl, scr, spr, str, squ). We will have our spelling test on Friday.
Known spelling words: splash, sprawling, scraped, strawberry, squint
Writing: We will begin our first informational piece this year. Students will be planning their informational writing and choosing what to inform their reader about.
Math: We will continue to learn about our new unit, multiplication and division. On Tuesday anf Wednesday we will have a quiz. On Monday we will have a multiplication strategies graded task. On Thursday we will begin learning about division. There will be homework on Monday and Tuesday.
Science/Social Studies: We will continue our social studies unit on maps and will begin a project about where we are on the map!
