LINEOUT- Do’s and Do Not:

The Thrower (Hooker)

  • DO keep your feet square and behind the touchline until the ball is released.
  • DO use a consistent follow-through with your hands pointing directly at your target.
  • DON’T "dummy" or pretend to throw the ball; this results in a free kick for the opposition.
  • DON’T step into the field of play before the ball has left your hands.

The Jumpers & Lifters

  • DO support the jumper until they have safely returned to the ground.
  • DO use your legs, not your back, to lift; keep the jumper’s body "long" and rigid for stability.
  • DON’T tackle or pull down an opponent while they are still in the air.
  • DON’T lift a player before the ball has been thrown by the hooker.

General Rules & Positioning

  • DO maintain a clear one-meter gap between the two lines until the ball is thrown.
  • DO ensure the ball travels at least 5 meters from the touchline.
  • DON’T throw the ball crooked; it must be thrown straight down the middle of the two lines.
  • DON’T allow non-participating players to move within 10 meters of the lineout until it is over.

Strategic Tips

  • Vary your calls: Use a "menu" of different movements (front, middle, back) to keep the defense guessing.
  • Speed is key: Aim to set your lineout within 30 seconds to maintain a high tempo and catch the defense off-guard.
