We will talk about each of the steps above and how you can apply each step. We will practice these steps with a micro-project here!
Step 1: Learn More
“What would you like to learn more about when it comes to e-cigarettes and the environment? For me, I wanted to know more about how the chemicals in an e-cigarette harms local animals.”
Start with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website which has great resources.

Remember when looking for answers to questions, there are two main considerations you should check:

Step 2: Be a Role Model
“What is a goal you can set for yourself where you will actively do something? My example goal is: I want to create a social media post calling out the dangers of nicotine and its effect on the environment and the bees.”
Write your personal goal here:
Step 3: Set Goals (SMART GOALS)
“You’ll need to ask yourself a few questions to ensure your goal is SMART. Smart Goals are effective tools when you are working to inspire change”
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time-bound
What is the specific part of the goal that you will work towards?
What is the part that you will be able to measure?
How will you accomplish your goal?
Is your goal realistic for you to accomplish?
What is the time-frame you want to achieve your goal in?
Step 3: Set Goals (SMART GOALS)
Let’s take a closer look at the following goal. Can you match the bolded sections to the SMART acronym?
What is the specific part of the goal that you will work towards?
What is the part that you will be able to measure?
“I want my social media post to help 20 people understand the danger to the bee population that nicotine products have within 24 hours and for at least three of those people to tell others.”

Time-Bound
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Step 3: Review your goal
“Revisit your original goal. Ask yourself a few questions to ensure your goal is SMART. Smart goals are effective tools when you are working to inspire change.”
Review or edit your personal goal here:
“Using your increased knowledge and experiences gained from your TeenEFFECT Ambassador Trainers, make a plan for how you can help others make a difference with your project. Choose between a Photovoice or PSA!”
Step 4: Plan a Project
PHOTOVOICE
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice is an innovative way to reflect, talk, learn, share, and make a difference for yourself and others; a straightforward method fostering peer, family, and community dialog.
Photovoice puts cameras in the hands of people with valuable lived experience so they can explore and share their perspectives on health, family, community, and their futures.
Step 4: Plan a Project
PSA
Public Service Announcements (PSAs)
A typical PSA is a part of a public awareness campaign to inform or educate the public about an issue.
A PSA can be anything like a social media post, poster or video. Make sure you have a strong call to action. It can be a challenge for people to quit smoking or refuse to buy e-cigarettes and other tobacco products or to join you: in signing a petition on a volunteer day, in writing to a legislator, etc...
Step 5: Inform
The next steps are to help you inform your community about what you have learned, the data you’ve collected, and the major problem you have identified that’s threatening your local environment.
This Project Planning Slide Deck will focus your experiences and knowledge to help you define your problem, generate community buy-in, and identify which level of government to approach for addressing your problem.
