  • In the Progressive era the atmosphere of reform was in the air and industries began to flourish- As a result of this, women began to enter the workforce and factories. Their role in public life began to emerge for the first time.
  • The National Women’s Trade Union (WTUL), was an organization of wealthy and working-class women who came together to aid the efforts of women who worked alongside men in textile and garment factories.

  • Children often worked in factories during the Progressive era- sometimes they were preferred over adults because they were small and could fit between machines.

  • As a result of large groups of immigrants coming to the U.S- cities experienced MAJOR growth in population and rise of industry. This became known as Urbanization.

  • The National Woman Suffrage Association was formed as a result of women not being included in the 15th amendment. The group was initially formed because the American Equal Rights Association was split over the decision to advocate for allowing women the right to vote.

Ellis Island, New York

  • From 1892 to 1954 approximately 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Many immigrants were fleeing from poverty and religious persecution. The arrived at Ellis Island with the ideals of obtaining the “American Dream”
  • Mostof these immigrants came from Europe.

  • The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) was formed in 1909. It was formed by black and white activists in New York to advocate against the violence that had been occurring to African Americans around the country.

  • The 1900 census reported that nearly 2 million children were working (this made up roughly 6% of the American labor force).
  • Children as young as 5 were recruited to work in the factories.

Factory Conditions

  • LONG hours.
  • Very little pay.
  • Workers often lost their jobs because they were getting sick (inhaling factory smoke) or hurt from the machines.
  • SHARP pay cuts.
  • No job guarantee.
  • Safety was not a priority in factories- efficiency was. Worker safety was NOT guaranteed and no one had to answer to safety conditions.
