Diction vs. Mood

  • All written work uses Diction (specific word choice) to bring out feeling and emotion from the reader.
    • Diction is the choice of words writers use to communicate their ideas. They base their choice of diction on the content, type or piece of writing, and audience.
    • Writing a poem vs. an academic research paper
    • Fiction vs. Nonfiction
  • The emotional response that the writer wishes to evoke in the reader through a story is called Mood.
    • Words that are commonly used to describe mood are: happy, irritable, melancholy, peaceful, energetic, detached, distracted.
