Why are ATL important?

By combining ATL and the attributes of the learner profile, PYP students become self-regulated learners. Self-regulated learners are agents of their own learning. They know how to:

  • set learning goals
  • ask open-ended questions
  • generate motivation and perseverance
  • reflect on achievement
  • try out different learning processes
  • self-assess as they learn
  • adjust their learning processes where necessary

(Zimmerman and Schunk 2001; de Bruin et al. 2012; Wolters 2011).

  • 22 focused ATL
  • Continuum to measure growth
  • ATL used as part of collaborative planning and assessment
  • In the PYP the goal is to be aware of ATL, in MYP students acquire and in DP student amalgamate.

  • Talk about the skills that you notice in your child
  • Set, monitor and reflect on goals related to the ATL with your child

Success Criteria for Parents Giving Constructive Feedback to Their Child

  • Be Specific: Clearly identify what the child did well and what could be improved - Example: "I loved how you stayed focused while working on your project. Now let’s talk about making the presentation more organized."
  • Focus on Effort and Process - Example: "You worked so hard on this math problem. Let’s look at where the mistake happened so you can fix it."
  • Use “I” Statements - Example: "I think your drawing is very creative, and I wonder how adding more shading could make it stand out even more."
  • Encourage Reflection - Example: "What part of this assignment are you most proud of? What would you change if you had more time?"
