October is BULLYING PREVENTION month.

19 of 40

What Is Bullying?

It's bullying if:

• one person is hurting another with unwanted words or behavior, and

• the person being hurt has a hard time making it stop.

• The behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated.

• The kids who are doing it have more power.*

*“Power” can mean the person bullying is older, bigger or stronger, more popular, or there’s a group of kids who “gang up” on someone.

I pledge to always INCLUDE others.

What are some examples of not including others?

Does it hurt someone’s feelings not to be included?

In the video, there was the line, “I put myself down”. -What does this mean? What can you do to help?

In the video, there is a line: “I’m learning to stand up to bullying.”

• Have you heard the term “self-advocacy?” What do you think it means?

• How is self-advocacy important in addressing and responding to bullying?

23 of 40

I pledge to ACCEPT those who are different from me.

“I don’t bully.”

  • What does this mean to you?
  • Do you think that kids who are bullied sometimes react by being unkind to other kids? Why or why not?

“I am different.”

  • What does this mean to you?
  • Do you think kids are bullied for their differences? Why or why not?
  • Do you think everyone is “different” in some way? Why or why not?

“Don’t make fun of me.”

  • How do you think it feels to be made fun of for something you cannot change?

24 of 40

I pledge to always try to use KIND WORDS and actions to others.

“It makes me feel sad.”

  • Do you think seeing kids getting bullied makes other students feel sad. Why?

“It hurts my feelings.”

  • How is name-calling, put-downs, and negative words just as hurtful as punching, kicking, and pushing someone?
  • What happens to someone who hears negative words from others every day, over and over, day after day? How does that person begin to feel about him/herself?

“It’s better to be a friend.”

  • How does being a friend to someone who is bullied help?
  • How can you help someone being bullied?

25 of 40

I pledge to stand TOGETHER in my school against BULLYING.

“Bullying is hurting too many people in this world.”

  • Do you think bullying is a worldwide problem? If yes, why?

A powerful way to address bullying is for students to support other students.

“tall, short, skinny, or round, you have a voice, so make a sound, never meant to be the same.”

  • What does this mean to you?
  • What can you do to help stop bullying?

“You have to care.”

  • Why is it important that we all try to prevent bullying from happening?
  • How do you think it feels to be bullied?
  • How would those being bullied at school do better if they knew they could go to school without being hurt, harmed, or teased?

A word said that stayed with us too long.

A word spoken we wish we could take back.

A word unsaid we wished we had said.

Whether we heard it, spoke it, or wished it to be said, one thing is for sure - words, or lack thereof, have a profound impact on our well-being and the way we see ourselves in relation to the world.

TAKE-AWAY

  • Words cannot be unsaid.
  • No matter how much we apologize, their damage cannot be undone.
  • Though band-aids help with physical ailments, they cannot be placed on a person’s heart.
  • Hurtful words create scars inside us, and if we let them, they can last a lifetime.

Use your words to…

be someone’s sunshine!

make someone’s day!
