Dear Parents,
I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about a high frequency word program that we will be using this year. Part of reading is the mastery of high frequency words, which are word students will find occurring often in books and do not always follow regular phonics rules. They will have the opportunity to learn up to 100+ words throughout the rest of the year. Each set of words is placed on a different type of ball or sports equipment. The first set of ball words are what we call “Baseball Words.” Students will work on this set until they can read them easily. When they have done this successfully, they will put their name on the Baseball Words Champ Poster and a new list of ball words to master.
The wonderful thing about this system is that everyone can work at their own pace. Everyone’s successes are celebrated, and what we have found over the years is that our students learn to work with each other to reach their goals. We talk a great deal about being a team and working together. It is really quite amazing!
Along with practicing their words during our whole and small group instruction or when they finish their work early, they are also encouraged to practice at home. For that reason, I will always send home a new ball list when they pass, so you can work with
them to help them “level up” to the next set of words.
I certainly appreciate all you do to support your child.
Get ready for some exciting Ball Word fun and please
contact me with any questions you have!
Sincerely,
Ms. Gibosn
Dear Parents,
I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about a sight word recognition program we are using in my room. Part of reading instruction is the introduction and mastery of tricky words/sight words. For that reason, they will have the opportunity to learn up to 100+ words throughout the rest of the year. That’s 8 sets of 20 words that we will teach in class, plus 2 bonus lists (10 words in each) for children that are ready and able to go above and beyond. Each set of words is placed on a different type of ball or sports equipment. The first set of ball words are what we call Baseball Words. Students will work on this set until they can read them easily. When they have done this successfully, they will receive an incentive and a new list of ball words to master.
The wonderful thing about this system is that everyone can work at their own pace. It allows students who may not be as far as others to find success without frustration and, likewise, allows students who are ready to read and move at a faster pace to do so without becoming bored. Everyone’s successes are celebrated, and what we have found over the years is that our students learn to work with each other to reach their goals. We talk a great deal about being a team and working together. It is really quite amazing!
Along with practicing their words during our whole and small group instruction or when they finish their work early, they are also encouraged to practice at home if they choose. Please practice these words nightly.
We certainly appreciate all you do for your child.
