Notes for you: You may find yourself in different recruiting situations: interest meetings for students, parent night presentations, making a pitch to your administrators or superintendent. You can use this presentation for the basis of all of these situations, but feel free to add your own slides to personalize and emphasize. You’ll see suggestions for this in the notes.

For Parents: Overall, your focus is likely to be how yearbook prepares students for life with a variety of skills, so the main slides will be appropriate talking points. However, it may also be important to focus on how different yearbook class is for students. You may want to add slides at the end related to your specific expectations of yearbook students, detailing requirements like workdays and covering events.

For Students: Depending on your school and the students who show interest in yearbook, you may want to appeal to two different modes of thought:

Yearbook looks great on your resume. It WILL help you get into college and is as important as AP Calculus.
Yearbook is fun. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. The bonds you make in yearbook will go beyond many other associations you form in high school.

For this reason, you will definitely want to add in slides showing fun things you do.

For Parents:

At its foundation, students learn basic yearbook skills in yearbook
But more than that, these are skills that prepare students for a much broader range of careers.
Few yearbookers go on on a career in journalism, but MANY refer back to the skills they learned in yearbook to help them with college and with their careers.
Students who take yearbook for multiple years generally specialize in the skills they enjoy most, such as photography or graphic design.
Students also have many opportunities to learn leadership skills, and perhaps become leaders in the program

For Students:

Even if you don’t want to be a journalist, the skills you learn in yearbook will help prepare you for a broad range of careers
Journalism isn’t a class that EVERY student takes. It will help you stand out to college recruiters
MANY former yearbook students refer back to the skills they learned in yearbook as helping them with college and with their careers.
Students who take yearbook for multiple years generally specialize in the skills they enjoy most, such as photography or graphic design.

For Parents:

It’s possible for students to learn business skills in a class, but how real-world are the lessons of economics or business 101 classes?
In yearbook, we have real budgets and real sales. Without ad and book sales, we wouldn’t be able to support a yearbook program.
We also have real deadlines. If we miss our deadlines, our book won’t arrive on time. That’s a real-world consequence.

Note: If you don’t sell books at your school, you can still talk about marketing and promoting the book to build excitement and increase buy-in for the final product.

For Students:

If you’ve ever thought about owning your own business or becoming an entrepreneur, yearbook can give you some real-world experience in business.
We have budgets, sales and deadlines.
We have seen obvious returns on our social media campaigns and in-school campaigns to sell yearbooks.
At the end of the day, a yearbook is a product, so we make sure that our product is one that our customers (the students) want to buy
