Studying the interactions between the American pika and Yellow-bellied marmot to determine patterns of behavioral change that could possibly be linked to climate shifts.
The mission of the project was to determine whether or not there is evidence that the American pika on the Niwot Ridge depends or benefits from the Yellow-bellied Marmot by sharing a microbiota. Lab results from samples collected were able to indicate if there is a possibility that pikas depend on marmot feces for immunological defenses, in an increasingly warm climate where pathogens may be a more frequent threat.
