GOAL

The Time Synchronization Industry-Academia Workstream (TSIAW) brings together researchers and industry practitioners to discuss and provide novel solutions for challenging problems in time synchronization of connected devices and applications.

TSIAW Objectives (1)

Bridge the gap between theory and practice: The TSIAW will act as a bridge between theoretical research and industry needs. By bringing together researchers and practitioners, the workstream will ensure that research efforts address real-world time synchronization challenging problems of the ever-growing and complex Communication Networks, Distributed Systems, Devices and Applications by developing robust, reliable and scalable novel solutions.

TSIAW Objectives (2)

Advance the research in the field of time synchronization: The TSIAW will strive to push the boundaries of time synchronization research by facilitating collaboration between industry and academia. This will involve identifying critical research areas, promoting joint research projects, and disseminating findings and solutions through conferences (e.g. ISPCS, ICC, Globecom, …), forums (International Time & Sync Forum ITSF, workshops (e.g. ATIS' Workshop on Synchronization and Timing Systems WSTS), Poster/Demo sessions (e.g. demos in OCP Global/Local summits), and publications (e.g. ACM/IEEE Journal and Magazine publications).

TSIAW Objectives (3)

The TSIAW creates a platform to foster the communication and collaboration among industry professionals, and researchers working on challenging time synchronization problems to develop and demonstrate novel solutions.

To achieve this objective Workstream Monthly and Project meetings will be scheduled, and we will create a central repository for research artifacts including papers, presentations and best practices related to time synchronization.

TSIAW Objectives (4)

Develop Time Synchronization Projects:  The TSIAW will facilitate the development of joint research projects between industry and academia.

Provide Time Synchronization Data for Decision Makers:  Help provide that data required to build the business case of the projects. For example, TSIAW should help provide the data which shows that the use of precise time can make the data center and edge applications (AI, Databases, Microservices, etc.) run 2x to 1000+x better in performance, power, latency and/or cost when compared to unsynchronized solution.

TSIAW Monthly Meetings

  • The team will meet once a month.
    • Everyone in the TAP community will be invited to the monthly meeting
    • First Thursday of every month?
      • We can send a doodle poll to the OCP TAP community to select the date/time of the monthly meeting.
  • The objectives of the monthly meetings are:
    • Present challenging time synchronization problems and novel solutions and demonstrations. Every one is welcome to present.
      • Selected solutions and demonstrations can be submitted to relevant conferences, workshops, symposia, journals/magazine, …. Etc
    • Review the status of active projects.
