What is Filecoin Green?

Make Filecoin verifiably sustainable

Build the world’s best tools to measure and reduce environmental impacts into Web3 protocols

Filecoin Green is our effort to make rich environmental accounting a Web3 Superpower.

By building the Greenhouse Gas Protocol into Web3, we will allow verifiable environmental data to flow through supply chains in minutes, not months.

Filecoin Green SP’s Guidance Documentation

  • To achieve any credible decarbonization goals, actors must start with a comprehensive carbon accounting exercise, and in order to do so they must have a robust way to measure, track, and report their electricity use and the associated GHG Emissions.
  • Carbon accounting is the process by which organizations inventory and audit the greenhouse gasses (GHGs) they generate, including those the organization is directly and indirectly responsible for emitting. This process allows organizations to better understand and manage the climate impacts of their operations, and may be used to inform business strategy and decision-making.
  • Please refer to the Filecoin Green Gitbook for specific carbon accounting guidance documentation.

Scope’s of Emissions

  • The most widely used approach for carbon accounting is the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, a joint initiative by the nonprofits WRI (World Resources Institute) and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development).
  • The GHG Protocol defines three “Scopes” of emissions for GHG accounting and reporting purposes:
    1. Scope 1: Direct emissions that result from an organization’s activities, such as fuel combustion from facilities.
    2. Scope 2: Indirect emissions associated with an organization’s activities, often from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by your company.
    3. Scope 3: Indirect emissions from an organization’s supply chain (rather that its primary operations), such as embodied emissions in purchased raw materials.

GHG Calculation Example

When conducting a GHG Calculation, the four necessary steps are to:

  1. Determine the ‘operational boundaries’ for reporting (use Equity Approach for most).
  2. Obtain activity data (i.e., electricity consumption) for the reporting period.
  3. Determine electricity grid emissions factors (by choosing which Accounting Methodology you should use).
  4. Utilize emissions factors and match to activity data.

CO2.Storage

Use Case Ideas

  • Implementing the tokenization of natural resources, like lands, forests.
  • A micro-crowdfunding system for communities. Allowing communities to crowdsource through an online decentralized donation system.
  • A platform to help preserve & protect the biodiversity & health of our ecosystem.
  • Create a digital toolbox that shows people & business how to build in a more sustainable way.
  • A sustainability dapp, that allows people to create a lifestyle with zero waste.
  • Gamifying going green and reducing waste generation through decentralization through dynamic NFTs and co2.storage.
  • Build a solution to create affordable & accessible educational resources.
  • Create a tool that track actions & steps to achieve the Global Sustainability Goals.
