Options for CVHS students to earn college credits

  1. Running Start - Students can attend EWU, SCC or SFCC in grades 11 and/or 12, earning both high school and college credit
  2. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
  3. College in the High School - Students can earn EWU credit by passing approved CIHS courses taught by CVHS teachers, while staying at the high school.
  4. New for students in the Class of 2029: Students can work toward earning an AA Degree at SCC through a combination of College in the High School credits through EWU and online Running Start credits through SCC.

Potential Challenges

  • Grades are PERMANENT - HS and College Transcript
  • Parents/Guardians DO NOT have access to grades
  • Potential conflicts between HS and college course offerings and school activities
  • Certain classes are not offered every quarter - PLANNING REQUIRED
  • Transportation is the student’s responsibility
  • Some highly-selective colleges/universities may not accept Running Start credits - Students should always research potential colleges and universities to determine how they might award credits.

Next Steps for Students interested in AP or College in the High School Courses

  • Students began planning their Course Registrations in Advisory TODAY.
  • Students are encouraged to talk with their current teachers to help them determine if they may be ready to take on an AP or CIHS course.
  • Students will complete online registration beginning on 2/18.
  • Students will have the opportunity to sign up for multiple CIHS or AP options, depending on grade level and prerequisite completion.
  • During the fall, CIHS teachers will help students register for CIHS courses through EWU as a part of their class.
  • Students who have enrolled in AP courses will have the option to sign up to take AP exams as well.

  2. Attend CV’s Running Start Training SessionREQUIRED
    • SCC & SFCC Wednesday, February 26th during lunch in The Career Center
    • EWU Thursday, February 27th during lunch in The Career Center
  3. Review, sign, and return the Running Start Participation

Agreement.

  • Apply to college of choice-links in Google Classroom - Priority Deadline: April 18th
  • Complete all required new student orientation steps through colleges.
  • Meet with HS Counselor to complete Grad Plan, EVF, etc.
  • Register for classes at the university.
  • Complete regular HS registration (you will register for a full HS schedule - we will adjust later).

  • Each grade earned at the college IMPACTS YOUR HIGH SCHOOL GPA!
  • Students meet with their HS Counselor each quarter to: fill out Enrollment Verification Form (EVF) for EWU & Grad Plan Sheet (GPS) for the Community Colleges
    • Students can schedule an appointment with their HS Counselor
  • Students meet with their college counselor/advisor each quarter
    • EWU: New Advisor (required) - BEFORE HS meeting

Running Start Scheduling Tips

  • Students can attend full-time or part-time (split RS/HS)
    • Students sometimes stay at CVHS to access:
      • Math
      • Performing Arts
      • CVVL (i.e. online PE)
  • Students should take HS course early or late in the day
    • Does not work in the middle of the day.

Running Start CREDITS: 5 credit colleges classes count for 1.0 total high school credit.

This sample student will earn 9 total credits through Running Start and 1.0 total credits through Algebra 2A/2B at the high school, for 10 total credits.

  • Students are eligible to participate in high school graduation ceremonies
    • Must complete all HS Graduation Requirements by the end of winter quarter senior year to ensure participation at CVHS Graduation Ceremony
