1. Mood Metaphors

Ask: “If your mood today were a weather forecast, what would it be?”� Students respond with fun metaphors like “sunny with a chance of snacks.”

2. The Emoji Face Game

Students draw an emoji on a sticky note that shows how they feel, then explain it to a partner or group.

3. One Word Check-In

Each student shares one word that describes how they’re feeling today. Optional: Go around in a circle with a soft toss ball.

4. Stand Up If…

Statements like: “Stand up if you like dogs more than cats,” or “Stand up if you’ve ever felt nervous before a test.” Builds connection and empathy.

5. Feelings Charades

Students act out different emotions (happy, frustrated, confused, etc.) and others guess. Helps build emotion recognition skills.

6. Highs & Lows

Each student shares one high and one low from their week or day. Can be done in pairs, small groups, or as a class.

7. Inside-Outside Circles

Two concentric circles of students rotate and answer quick SEL prompts like:

  • “What’s something that makes you feel calm?”�
  • “Who is someone that helps you feel safe?”

8. What’s in Your Backpack? (Figuratively)

Ask: “What’s one thing you’re carrying emotionally today?” This helps students unpack thoughts or stress.

9. Compliment Chain

One student starts by complimenting someone. That person then gives a compliment to someone else, and so on.

10. Would You Rather – SEL Edition

  • “Would you rather talk about your feelings or write them down?”�
  • “Would you rather cheer someone up or be cheered up?”

You can create and add additional scenarios.
