1ST MODEL HIGH SCHOOL OF ATHENS - GENNADEIO

  • 1829: Established on the island of Aegina – the capital of the newly established Greek State, by the governor of Greece.
  • 1834: moves to the new capital, Athens, being the only public secondary school. Gets a lot of funding, becomes widely known and attracts students from all over Greece.
  • Gennadeios: The first principal of the school in Athens.
  • After 1837, the school is hosted in several different buildings in Athens, trying to house a big number of students.
  • Since 2000 housed on Ipitou street, in the house of Petros Ipitos (1795-1861), a medical doctor and philosopher. He helped Greeks in their fight against the Ottoman Empire.
  • Library of 4,500 books, some dating from the 16th century.
