KEY FEATURES OF THE GREEK EDUCATION SYSTEM

• Free education to all citizens and at all levels.
• Centralised. The Ministry of Education regulates curricula content, staff recruitment and funding.
• National State exams for entrance to University at the end of 12^th grade.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION��(MOSTLY PUBLIC BUT ALSO PRIVATE)

• Pre-primary School: compulsory for all 4 and 5-year-old children
• Primary School:

1^st – 6^th grade, ages 6-12

• Middle School:

7^th – 9^th grade, ages 12-15

10^th – 12^th grade, ages 15-18

SECONDARY EDUCATION

1^ST MODEL HIGH SCHOOL OF ATHENS - GENNADEIO

• 1829: Established on the island of Aegina – the capital of the newly established Greek State, by the governor of Greece.
• 1834: moves to the new capital, Athens, being the only public secondary school. Gets a lot of funding, becomes widely known and attracts students from all over Greece.
• Gennadeios: The first principal of the school in Athens.
• After 1837, the school is hosted in several different buildings in Athens, trying to house a big number of students.
• Since 2000 housed on Ipitou street, in the house of Petros Ipitos (1795-1861), a medical doctor and philosopher. He helped Greeks in their fight against the Ottoman Empire.
• Library of 4,500 books, some dating from the 16^th century.
