Why did we choose this dataset?

We decided that this data would provide the best visuals as well as tell a story as to the socioeconomic disparities in our city.

The dataset was straightforward and provided a lot of possible visualizations - such as a topographic map as well as bra graphs. When we talk of the topographic map, it is in reference to the provided geojson which is the parcel map.

How do we prove it?

Distance from SU: To understand how far each data point can be influenced by SU

Property Value per acre: The value of the infrastructure on the land - How much people are investing into the property

Land Value per acre: The value of the land itself - The best representation to normalize large and small parcels with a standardized system

How’d we choose our graphs?

Our definition of value was the difference between the total value and land value of the property, aka the property value

We could track these differences via a topographic map of Syracuse, with different qualities being represented by different colors.

Or we could use bar graphs to display the distribution of various factors across Syracuse.

Steps Syracuse Can Take Going Forward

Main Takeaway from our data:

Anywhere Students Go Thrives

Moving Forward:

  • Give students more opportunities to explore syracuse
  • Provide more buses into the “downtown” area, and work with local businesses to incentivize students to visit the area.
