A transformative, collaborative community empowering educators to drive innovation in STEM education for all students. We provide unique professional development opportunities for faculty and future faculty, extensive support for a wide range of joint projects, and a community that has the broad aim of student success in STEM. We work together to foster the continued development of each member of the community and to promote their success.

Land Acknowledgments

Background

• Acknowledges Indigenous peoples, territories, and cultures
• Given at beginning of gathering by host
• Situates the host, gathering and participants in relation to land and its indigenous peoples
• Creates awareness of history of land
• Traditionally given at in person events (where all on same land)

• Challenge -How do I give a virtual acknowledgment
• How to do it:
• Host gives recognition to the land that they, individually, are on
• Acknowledge that most others are on different territory
• Invite others to offer their own land acknowledgements!

Today’s Land Acknowledgement

I am joining you today from the traditional homelands of the Abenaki, Pennacook and Wabanaki Peoples past and present. I acknowledge and honor with gratitude the land and waterways of the alnobak (people) who have stewarded N’dakinna (homeland) throughout the generations.

According to Tribal oral tradition, Abenaki people have lived in the place now called New Hampshire for more than 12,000 years—since before Tribal memory.

The Abenaki are part of a larger group of Indigenous people who called themselves Wabanaki or “People of the Dawn,” and form one of many communities connected by a common Algonquian language family.

How can I Create a Land Acknowledgement?

There are no true "best practices"!

They are all unique to the place, Nations, communities and relationships being acknowledged.

General consensus is they should be:

• Intentional
• Meaningful
• Accurate
