  Badnik(Christmas Eve)���

  • Badnik(Christmas Eve) is the evening or the entire day before Christmas Day, and it is the festival commemorating the birth of Jesus.It is cellebrated on the 6th of January.

     What do people eat for Badnik?

              The  dishes that are often served for Christmas Eve are:

     Homemade bread that has a coin in it. This bread is distributed among all the family members by the oldest person in the house, and slices of bread are given to god and the house and some people that own livestock also set aside slices of bread for their livestock.

    Banica is also served with a snake made of bread and before people start eating it they say: "Toady I saw it and I will see it next year this time" (referring to the snake) .This saying originates from Kratovo a small town in Macedonia, and it is characteristic only for that region not for the entire country.

    Baked beans, fish, sarma and homemade alcohol like brandy and wine are also usually served for Christmas Eve..

                Kolede

 Kolede is traditional caroling, which starts in the morning on 6th January. For Kolede kids go from house to house and sing traditional songs. After the song is finished  the person that the song is sang for rewards them with fruits, nuts, candies and money.

 How people spent Christmas Day?

  • On Christmas Day people usually go to the church in the morning where they light a candle for their health and the health of the family members. Later during the day, they usually visit their relatives and have lunch together.
