Reading Comprehension Model at the �School of Philosophy and Letters

  • Aim of this presentation: to introduce the audience to a Reading Comprehension Model for authentic academic texts written in English that was developed in the School of Philosophy and Letters.
  • The aim of this model was to help students become strategic and autonomous readers even if they had a basic knowledge of the English language and poor previous knowledge of the social sciences fields of study.

Introductory course

Since 1985 students have to complete an introductory course that lasts a year.

  • Students have to pass six subjects:
  • Two of them are common for all the university courses (on site or distance)
  • Two are connected with three orientations: Social and Human Sciences, Biological and Health Sciences, and Exact, Technological, and Design Sciences.
  • Two are specific for the chosen course of study��

Why an introductory course?�Aims

  • To give the students a basic, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary education
  • To achieve knowledge and abilities in the use of various languages and information
  • To help them choose an adequate course of study
  • To assume the responsibility of aiming at a permanent university education
  • To become aware of the importance of group and interdisciplinary work.
  • To begin acquiring scientific knowledge of different fields of study and the interpretation of its philosophical, epistemological, and methodological underpinnings.
  • To face the problems with a systematic and methodological approach.

The main purpose is to deconstruct an encyclopedic and fragmented vision of knowledge����

Importance of the English language at Higher Education

  • Need to include foreign language reading comprehension courses in the curriculum
  • Students should be able to read comprehensively the discourse genres that are frequent in their fields of studies.
  • Students need to be acquainted with the authentic academic texts that they usually read when they are undergraduates or when they are graduates and begin their personal research.

Philosophy and Letters

  • Students can major in letters, philosophy, education, librarianship and information sciences, arts, history, geography, anthropology, and editing.

Reading Comprehension Courses at Philosophy and Letters

  • Obligatory reading comprehension courses of a Latin Language (Italian, Portuguese, or French) and a German language (German or English)
  • These courses last three terms with four hour lessons a week (64 hours each term)
  • In three terms they have to be able to read an authentic RA written in English.
  • Students can attend these courses without any previous exam or requisite.
  • The groups of students are heterogeneous with different linguistic background, reading abilities, and at different knowledge levels in their course of studies at the University.

Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge was the flashpoint for a well-known debate between Kuhn and Popper, in which the former emphasized the importance of ‘normal science’ qua puzzle solving and the latter (and his supporters) questioned the very idea that ‘normal science’, so construed, could count as good science at all.
