Professional Development

Principals, in partnership with our Tech Integrators, have organized Zoom based PD for teachers in all buildings.

Objectives:

  • Build teacher capacity to use existing resources (Zoom, Google Classroom, Seesaw, etc.)
  • Support teachers in developing lessons using virtual resources

Instructional Model

Blended virtual learning includes:

  • Face-to-face instruction through Zoom (whole class, small group, 1:1)
  • Group activities through Zoom and Google Classroom
  • Flipped lessons, using video lessons and screencasts
  • Practice through specialized apps (Lexia, Raz-Kids, ConnectED Math, etc.)
  • Threaded discussions through Google Classroom & Schoology
  • Short formative assessments through Edulastic, Google Forms, & Seesaw
  • Hands-on activities that can be completed at home
  • Independent reading, writing, research, exercise, and projects

We are working to limit screen time and enhance non-screen activities.

Calendar

March 16-20 Planning, PLC, & PD

March 23-27 Spring Break

March 30 Planning, PLC, & PD

March 31 Student/family connection day (ensure all are online and ready)

April 1 First day, virtual learning

We will treat the first several days of virtual learning like the first few days of school. This is a chance to set expectations, re-establish relationships, learn procedures and tools, etc.

Attendance

Teachers will take attendance daily, but the meaning of attendance changes.

We are thinking more about ENGAGEMENT than physical presence. A teacher counts a student as present for:

  • Attending Zoom sessions
  • Participating in threaded discussions
  • Submitting work
  • Taking an assessment
  • Uploading a video
  • 1:1 communication
  • Etc.

PLC Process

District wide, our PLC teams continue to meet a minimum of one hour per week. Most teams are exceeding these expectations.

The usual focus on the four critical questions of a PLC and professional study have expanded to include group planning for virtual lessons, units, assessments, etc. Our teachers are supporting one another and sharing the load.

Special Services

Specially Designed Instruction will continue within the Instructional Model:

  • Special Education Staff and Related Service Providers (OT, SLP and PT) have collaborated with General Education Teachers to provide services within the IEP in the Virtual Learning setting
  • Students with Disabilities will continue to receive the instructional service minutes through Zoom and phone conferencing (small group, 1:1) with the special education staff and related service providers
  • Instructional tasks are being designed to meet the individual needs of each learner. Binders of activities addressing goals and learning tasks are also put together to support learning at home with hands-on activities that can be completed at home
  • English Language needs for students will continue with instructional supports in place for students with an IELP
  • Accommodations for students with 504 Plans are being implemented into the instructional model with the General Educators
  • Finally, School Counselors will be providing counseling and support to students with individual student contact via a virtual mode and chat rooms available to students.
