    • We take all the ingredients from Eatwell Farm’s community supported agriculture box for the week and learn a simple and tasty recipe for using up lots of vegetables.

    • Greens such as Indian lettuce, sunflower seeds, amaranth, elderberry, and quail eggs have been a part of the Indigenous Ohlone diet for many centuries.
  • Corn Tortillas
    • California used to be a part of Mexico! Corn is a staple of Mesoamerican and Mexican food culture.
  • Collard Greens
    • The Second Great Migration brought millions of African Americans and their foodways to cities like SF during and after WWII.
  • Rainbow Pride Parfait
    • We learn about Gilbert Baker and the making of the rainbow flag, then make our own edible version.

    • The Mohave are deeply connected to the mesquite tree from cradle to grave.
  • Three Sisters Stew
    • Almost all Native peoples in present-day California had abundant sources of food, but a few groups practiced agriculture and developed the companion planting method of growing corn, beans, and squash together.

    • Scientists are feeding seaweed to cows and find that the diet significantly reduces the methane emissions associated with the production of beef and dairy.

School tours begin 10/26

  • School tours for prospective families begin October 26 and run through January. 60+ people are already signed up
  • We need parent volunteer tour guides!
    • Families across all grades, especially kindergarten
    • Families with kids in the Y
    • Tours last 1 hour - pick the dates that fit your schedule
    • New tour guides will be supported and paired with experienced guides
    • Talk to Cecilia or email tours@harveymilkpfc.org
  • Spread the word about HMCRA to friends, neighbors, preschool, etc. Families can sign up to tour using this form.

Before/After Care update

  • Intro:
    • Matt Gipple, Eva Gipple’s (K) dad.
    • Eva is in before + after care. I do one drop or pickup most days, see the Y folks most days.
    • My job here – “Liaise.” Questions, issues, info, ideas. So far: PFC childcare, Spanish, coordinate events, strike planning, learn programming.
  • Spanish at before / after care?
    • Different options for before and after care
    • Details in the survey being emailed out Thurs/Fri or use printed copies the Y staff will have
    • Fill out the survey and we’ll see what we can do!
  • YMCA monthly social –
    • Open to whole school, not just B/A participants
    • Two in Oct: 1. Social is combined with school movie night.
    • 2. Info pathways workshop. Dinner, childcare, local organization presentation. More info coming.
