He pioneered a painting technique called “Pointillism”. This is where the artist uses tiny separate dots or brush strokes of individual colors next to each other without blending them to create a composition. The viewer’s eye mixes the colors when seen from a distance.

Seurat went to art school and was always very interested in science. His way of not blending the colors is very scientific and relates to how our human eyes see color.��He studied chemistry and how light affects color, specifically the “primary” colors of red, yellow and blue. Here is a color wheel that has been “optically” mixed.

Here is one of Seurat’s Pointillism paintings. You can see that the image is made up of small dots of color all right next to each other!

At the end of his life, Seurat worked on a huge painting called “Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grand Jatte”. It is his most famous Pointillism painting.

Today we will be using the pointillism technique to create our own little landscapes.
