Who is the Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network

The Ōpāwaho Heathcote River Network (ŌHRN) is a community-based catchment group.

The ŌHRN is a community voice for the river.

We advocate for and promote the regeneration of the health and mauri of the river.

Port Hills sediment reduction

  • Sediment remains one of the biggest issues for the river
  • Community is keen to contribute to the Port Hills Plan and see it finalised
  • CCC needs to communicate about the status, intent and proposed timelines for this work

Weed surveillance

  • Intrusion of new weeds is increasing
  • A methodical approach by the CCC to identify and control
  • We advocate for a more open role for the community in weed surveillance and reporting

The Climate Resilience Fund

  • We support the continuation of funding the Climate Resilience Fund
  • 30 year reserve period - but start action and community engagement asap
  • ŌHRN published report on Climate Change effects on the river and catchment

Grants Funding

  • Retain community grants funding
  • Each dollar multiplied many times by volunteer effort
  • We support increasing Environmental Partnerships Fund
    • One of few funds that support work on public land.

Thanks to staff and elected members

  • Council staff are approachable, willing, and demonstrate commitment to the river and the city
  • Councillors and Community Board members most supportive of community action and input
