How to Create a Depth & Complexity Frame
1.Decide on the prompts of Depth & Complexity and the task statements you will use for analysis of the topic, question, or idea. (See Slide 7 for a planning sheet.)
2. Decide what you will have students place (or what you will place) in the middle. (See next page for ideas).
3. Choose the frame format you wish to use. Slides 9 - 22 have plain frames to choose from. Hint: Slide 20 is for sequencing! The rest of the slides have cool backgrounds, organized by content areas. There’s a Table of Contents for those slides on Slide 23.
4. Insert the icon or emoji you are using (see Slide 5 for what I use) into the corresponding section of the frame.
5. Type the task statements in the text boxes surrounding the frame. I suggest adding the icon or emoji to the task statement text boxes as well, just to prevent any confusion. I’ve used different colors to connect the task statement boxes to the response spaces (red/green/bright blue/dark blue)
6. Share with students digitally or print them out. If you print them out, add in a text box on the outside edge with the task statement OR display the questions to the class on a screen OR print the questions on the back.

If you’re using Depth & Complexity in your classroom, I can’t recommend the book highly enough. It’s worth it just for the questions! Ian Byrd and I wrote this to be helpful to teachers just like you. It’s available in both paperback and ebook formats.

There are two e-books that might help you in your Depth & Complexity practice, as well.
The Quick Guide is a super handy e-book that has a two-page spread for every element and content imperative. It’s been laid out by a graphic designer to be very cool!
The Question Stems e-book has all of the question stems from the Guide, as well as some extras, organized by Depth & Complexity element AND Bloom’s level. There are even Disciplinarian questions and questions for specific content areas.
You’ll be able to craft excellent task statements for frames, as well as questions for class discussion and other tasks easily with this helpful tool. Find it on TpT or Amazon.

YouTube has been keeping up, with loads or tutorials being added all of the time. I truly recommend watching a few. If you have trouble, feel free to reach out to me, to TpT (if it’s a tech issue), or your friendly neighborhood YouTube channel to get tips!
I’ve got some of my own on my YouTube channel.
One tip: Every Google Slide has its own unique URL. If you want to link to a specific slide, simple click on the slide in the left pane (where you see all of the slides). The URL in the URL bar is the link to that particular slide. That lets you share a single slide in a presentation, rather than the entire presentation.
