DO FIRST

Introduce the Unit Assessment to students. Explain that students will become geographers and use population and development data to evaluate the quality of life in a country. Review the four assessment components: Quick Snapshot, Data Collection, Data Synthesis, and Country Development Report Card. Show the sample report card so students can visualize expectations.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Hand out and direct students to page 1 of student worksheet
  2. Project and walk through each component
  3. Determine if countries will be chosen or assigned

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Listen and ask clarifying questions
  2. Review the assessment components
  3. Note strong elements of the exemplars

ACTIVITY 1 - LAUNCH

Students will complete a Quick Snapshot of their assigned country by locating it on a world map and recording basic geographic information. This activity helps students build geographic context before beginning their research.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Direct students to page 2
  2. Set clear academic and behavior expectations
  3. Circulate with students and provide support

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Locate country on the map

LESSON 14: Assessment - Continued

ACTIVITY 2 -

PRACTICE

Students will gather and analyze quantitative data related to seven quality of life indicators. They will use reliable sources to answer research questions and collect evidence about life in their assigned country. Students will then synthesize their findings by identifying strengths, challenges, and patterns.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Direct students to pages 3-7
  2. Review research expectations and source reliability
  3. Model how to record evidence
  4. Monitor and provide research support

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Conduct research using provided resources
  2. Collect and record data
  3. Complete pages 5-7

ACTIVITY 3 - EXHIBIT

Students will use their research to create a Country Development Report Card. They will assign grades to each quality of life indicator and justify those grades with evidence gathered during their investigation.

TEACHER ACTIONS

  1. Direct students to page 8
  2. Review grading criteria (A-F)
  3. Model one example category
  4. Monitor progress and support as needed

STUDENT ACTIONS

  1. Review collected evidence
  2. Assign grades to each indicator
  3. Write evidence-based explanations
  4. Complete page 8

CONCLUSION

Students will conclude the unit by completing the Unit 3 Inquiry Journal - Essential Question (page 7).

TEACHER ACTIONS

  • Provide students’ access to their Inquiry Journal and provide instructions
  • If desired, provide time for students to outline their paragraph using the template on page 8

STUDENT ACTIONS
