Students should not only hear about errors, they need to know where they stand regarding their knowledge on concepts, whether there were improvements in their effort and where they stand in terms of the goals for that topic or assignment.

Generic comments such as "great work" or "keep up the hard work" are positive, but not meaningful. Positive feedback helps students build their confidence and improves their positive self-talk. Meaningful feedback provides building blocks to help students become self-regulated learners and builds their confidence.

At its core, a growth mindset is the belief that a person’s intelligence and abilities can be improved upon with hard work, determination, and practice. The term itself describes how children face challenges and setbacks. Kids with a growth mindset believe that their ability to do anything can and will improve with practice and effort over time.

"NEW TEACHER" SCENARIO

Bonnie is a brand new teacher who has just given her first lesson to a class. She was very nervous the whole time she was teaching. Bonnie only got through about half her lesson because the students would not stop talking. She also wasted about 5 minutes because she could not remember the name of a website she wanted to use during the class and had to look for it. As the kids left, they mumbled that the class had been a waste of time. Once the students had left Bonnie started to cry.

Below are some of the points that Bonnie’s supervising teacher made about her lesson.
