Chapter 3: Number Sense

What are the biggest ideas?

What are the biggest ideas?

  • “Number Sense is a form of intuition that students develop about number (or quantity).
  • “Number sense is something that can be improved, although not necessarily by direct teaching. Moving through representations and playing games can help children’s number sense development.”

Race to 45

  • We start at zero and take turns adding 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 to the previous sum.
  • First person to get to 45 wins
  • Example
    • I pick 4 to start with.
    • You pick 5. We add the 5 to the 4 and we are at 9.
    • I pick 3 so we add the 3 to 9 and we are now at 12.
    • We keep going back and forth until someone reaches 45.
