What is DScan?

  • Directional Scanner
    • Built into every ship (& pod)
    • ‘Space radar’: scan area around you for other ships in space
    • Linked to your Overview presets
  • Benefits:
    • No skill requirements
    • Provides lots of info for survival / hunting
    • Works while cloaked
  • Limitations:
    • 14.3 AU maximum range
    • Can’t see cloaked/immune ships
    • No warp-in coordinates

Overview and setup (IV)

Tips

    • D-scan does not differentiate ship states
      • e.g. can’t tell if a ship is hostile or in your fleet
    • If your Overview is not set up properly, d-scan is less useful

    • On D-Scan, hold D-Scan button:
      • In-space view snaps to object

Range

  • Range slider next to Scan button

  • Increment marks for 1, 5, 10 AU (left to right)

  • Text box allows for typing custom ranges

  • Mousewheel over range text box = ∓ 0.1 AU

  • Ctrl-mousewheel over range text box = ∓ 1 AU

Angle (I)

  • Angle slider below Range slider
  • 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, and 180° increments
  • D-scan only scans in the direction your main camera is facing, not the camera inside your map!
    • L-click in space and drag
    • Scan cone moves with camera view
  • Linking map view and in-space view
    • Independent when Align with Camera is off

Angle (II)

1

  • Turn on Align with Camera (1)
  • Note changes
    • Cone stays fixed in place pointed AWAY from you
    • Rotating either the Map OR the in-space view changes camera for both simultaneously
  • Very important: D-Scan “points” in the direction of your CAMERA, not your ship facing
  • D-Scan can be “aimed” at a specific celestial object
    • Turn on Tracking Camera (Shift-C)
  • Any highlighted object can be detected by the scanner
  • Play with Angle for a bit; Set back to max

Non-Detectable objects

D-scan uses (I)

Defensive

    • Advance warning of potential hostiles
    • Detect combat probes

Offensive

    • Scouting/hunting: where is someone?
    • Catch people at warp-able celestials
    • Shorten combat probing times for people away from celestials

15 of 21

D-scan uses (II)

Defensive d-scan

  • Typically 360°, max range
  • Ping d-scan constantly
  • Detects ships, probes
  • Even cloaked ships must uncloak to switch from gatecloak to covops cloak
  • D-scan works during gatecloak: get an initial check of local space

Defensive scan essential at all times in Pochven and wormhole space: delayed Local

D-scan uses (III)

Offensive d-scan

  • Use range and angle variation to work out target location
  • Logical process of elimination
  • If target is at a celestial, you can warp to the celestial
  • Build up knowledge of likely target locations:
    • Epithal: customs office
    • Covetor: belt / ore site
    • Mackinaw: ice belt
    • Broadsword: gate
  • Can also use scan to get rough area to probe

Practical

  • Target hunting
    • Warp class to planet, instructor warps to moon/belt
    • Class must use d-scan to find instructor
  • Defensive scan
    • Class warp to planet, instructor warps outside of scanner range (> 14.3 AU)
    • Instructor warps to class and attempts to “lock” students
    • Students use D-scan to get warning and warp away

19 of 21

Practical

  • Full-on hunt
    • Instructor warps to random belt/moon anywhere
    • Students must find
  • Hide and seek
    • Couples
      • Pair students up
      • Have student groups run Full-On Hunt scenario with their partners
      • Switch when the hunter finds the target
    • Group
      • Everyone warp to different celestial
      • Call out random student for everyone to find
