THE SOLUTION: Create an app that helps people decide, with another person, where they want to go eat, in a fun and fast way!

OUR ROLES: UX designers

1X1 INTERVIEW PLAN

The interview plan is to narrow our interviewees to just 5 people. The questions that were included on the 1x1 interviews were to help us better understand what kind of mobile app that is needed to solve the major problem(s) of picking restaurants. Below are samples of our questions.

  1. Can you tell me about the last time you went out to eat?
  2. Can you tell me about a typical week for you as far as your eating patterns?
  3. Who do you usually like to go out to eat with?
  4. Describe the process of how you usually decide where to go eat?
  5. Tell me why you choose a particular restaurant?
  6. What do you think about trying new restaurants and why do you feel this way?
  7. Tell me about factors that influence your decision making when deciding on a restaurant.
  8. How do you communicate decisions during that process?
  9. What makes a restaurant memorable to you?
  10. If you are in a group of people you didn’t know very well, and you needed to choose a restaurant for everyone, how would you decided?
  11. How does the size of your group affect your decision making for choosing a restaurant?
  12. Any other factors you think about when trying to make a dining out decision with a group?

THE INTERVIEW 1X1

SARAH - 40

Sarah is married and a mom of 2 children. She likes to eat when it is convenient for her and her family. She especially likes to have date night and dinner alone with him. When they have dinner alone, she usually lets him pick what he wants to eat. His favorite food is BBQ and hers is Asian. Some week nights, she doesn’t feel like cooking and she will order take out for the family. She lets her children pick what they want to eat. They normally pick Burger King or McDonalds. When in large groups she will let other pick the restaurant.

ANDREA - 43

Andrea is married mom to 3 grown boys. She works with her husband doing UberEats. They eat out almost every day. If they get hungry while working, her husband throws out ideas she usually picks the restaurant. They tend to Eat at Las Palapas because of their loyalty rewards. Price is a big deciding factor when picking where to eat. When in large groups, she tends to recommend places that can accommodate a larger group, have a variety of food options, and affordable prices. Her biggest frustrations are with food that taste bad and cleanliness.

IRIS- 36

Iris is not married but has a spouse and no children, but has 3 pets! She enjoys going out to eat very often and considers herself a foodie. She goes out to eat with coworkers, friends and her partner. Making the decision can sometimes be difficult because there are so many great options out there and even more she wants to try. However, often, she is getting off of work and already hungry so needs to make a fairly quick decision. She likes great service and quality food and places that are covid friendly.

MICHAEL - 36

Michael is a single guy, no kids but does hang out with family and has 4 nieces. He enjoys going out to eat every Friday with family sometimes Saturdays. He likes trying new places , with new foods. Making decision depends on with whom he is with. Family most commonly decides via text group chat. Friday after work , hope for a place with pretty decent fast service or relaxing place to hang out with Family after a long week. Enjoys good service and food with good ambience, spacious.

IVAN - 25

Ivan is a single guy that only likes to go out with his friends. He is still in college and goes to a lot of bars on his days off.

He also works full time as a sales representative at a car dealership, which brings him a lot of stress in his daily life. When he decides to go eat with his friends, he lets his friends choose the place they will go to, or he just relies on google reviews. For the most part, he only likes restaurants that do not involve families (mainly kids.)

USER INSIGHT

Andrea needs help finding a restaurant that is local and she needs help finding a match that can be agreed upon.

During HANGRY user interviews, we discovered that people like to eat local, but have a hard time deciding where to go. They also want to have a good experience when trying a new place.

By creating HANGRY app, we will enable users to find a restaurant by just swiping left or right. This enables a quick decision when ruling out (or in) dining options. This will take out the stress and time consumption of the back and forth of trying to decide.

VALUE PROPOSITION

With HANGRY app, we will enable a stress free dining decision for users and their dining partner. We take the stress out of deciding where to go by allowing users to “match” with a restaurant by swiping left(no) or right(yes) on the options presented to them based on their preferences.

We believe we are different because we take into account all the restaurants nearby, show a clear restaurant overview in one glance, and enable users to have a unique and fast decision process by picking YES by swiping right and NO by swiping left.

Cooking at home:

Benefits - You have control of the meal, you save money (except any $ spent buying food, but generally is less expensive), and you can dress how you want!

Weaknesses - More effort to cook, especially for a group, and you have to deal with clean up

Word of mouth recommendation:

Benefits - You get a real life review and a recommendation for a place from a person you know.

Weaknesses - If you end up having different standards or preferences than that person, you could end up having an experience you didn’t want.

FINAL THOUGHTS

& FUTURE IDEAS

In our HANGRY case study, we learned that it is very important to do lots of user research. We also learned that asking the right questions is important so we can get the right feedback for the app. It is important to see exactly what the main priorities/goals of the user are. From our research we have created an app that allows people to make dining decisions quickly and agreeably with another person. Our app is faster than doing online research because it gives you a quick overview of the place, and let’s people make a decision quickly and get what they and their guest both want. We hope people will have fun and love to use Hangry!
