  • We would like you to fill out a survey as we go along today.

  • People
  • Places
  • Things
  • Anything At All

  • Outlines strategies to improve safety, mobility, and access for people who walk and bike
  • Not just infrastructure, also includes policies, programs and metrics
  • It is an iterative process

5 of 30

We Are Not Starting From Scratch

Lots of progress has been made since the City of Novi Non-motorized Master Plan in 2011

  • Novi ITC Trail
  • M-5 Metro Trail
  • Connections to the I-275 Trail

Planning for people who walk, bike and ride

  • About moving people – not objects
  • Focus on the safety of the most vulnerable roadways users, pedestrians and bicyclists
  • Let everyone travel independently and with dignity
  • Recognize that streets impact a community’s neighborhood, culture, commerce and environment

7 of 30

  • Please take a moment and complete the first page of the survey
  • If you are not sure where to circle on the map, fill in your zip code at the bottom

How do you get around Novi?

8 of 30

People Walking…running, in a wheelchair, pushing stroller, etc.

  • Wide range of temporary and long-term physical abilities
  • Various cognitive abilities
  • Different degrees of “traffic tolerance”
  • Some may be carrying or pushing cargo/kids

There is no required education program or licensing for pedestrians

9 of 30

Quality of Pedestrian Experience

  • Completeness of the system
  • Quality of the environment
  • Directness of travel
    • Most walking trips are about ¼ to ½ mile or 5 to 10 minutes
    • Most people will not go out of their way more than 10% of the total trip distance
  • Safety and comfort crossing the road

Are there other people out walking around?

10 of 30

The Pedestrian Network

  • Some neighborhoods have sidewalks
  • Some mobile home communities are missing sidewalk connections
  • Gaps along major roads
  • Existing crosswalk spacing is too far apart, people will not go that far out of their way to cross a road when there is demand
  • High speeds and traffic volumes make it difficult to cross the road

11 of 30

Pedestrian Safety

  • Pedestrian crashes represent only 1.1% of all crashes, but…

- 11.5% of all fatal crashes

    • 8% of serious injury crashes
  • Vehicle speeds could be contributing to higher-than-average injury crashes

    • e-bikes, electric scooters, pedal assisted bikes, etc.
  • Safety boils down to separation, visibility and expectations

No such thing as a “typical” cyclist

14 of 30

Quality of the Riding Experience

  • A variety of options that work for commuters and recreational riders
  • Nice and easy routes that appeal to the majority of people
  • The busier the road – the greater degree of separation from motorized traffic
  • Comfortable intersections

15 of 30

The Bikeway Network

  • Novi’s bicycle facilities primarily consist of pathways along the major roads
  • Bike lanes on S Lake Dr only in one direction
  • Neighborhood roads can provide low stress bicycle routes across the city
  • Improve connections to Lakeshore Park
