130G32 OHV Horizontal Shaft Engine

Customer Education

This is a 208cc horizontal shaft Utility type engine. It has heavy duty features and includes a dual element air cleaner, dual ball bearings, cast iron cylinder sleeve, helical cut gears, a metal fuel tank and low oil alert system. Introduce the engine as best suits your intent with this session. The 130G32 Teardown Script includes a number of points/features that can be noted from the outside of the engine and are provided as a means of familiarizing the student with this engine’s characteristics as well as Briggs & Stratton engines in general. Reassembly

This is a step-by-step reassembly process. It is not a race. Take your time when assembling the engine and listen for direction from the instructor
Do not work ahead!
Fasteners must be torqued to the proper torque value
Special procedures will be explained

Install Crankshaft

Lubricate governor gear
Install crankshaft by hand into cylinder block
Position connecting rod journal at 7 o-clock

Install Piston Assembly

WATCH THE YOUTUBE VIDEO!!!
Coat piston skirt, cylinder bore, rings and ring compressor walls with oil
Check rod orientation marks
DO NOT hammer or force piston assembly into block!

Lubricate piston assembly, rings, ring grooves, cylinder wall and ring compressor with oil
Set piston into bore. Be sure orientation marks (notch or triangle) on the piston crown faces toward the push rods
Unwind ring compressor far enough to stretch it over the piston/ring assembly. Do not unwind too far or tool will be damaged
Slide compressor over piston far enough that it covers all the rings
Firmly tighten ring compressor, compressing rings into the ring grooves. Remove piston assembly from bore and inspect that all rings are captured and compressed. Adjust compressor position on piston to accomplish this if necessary
Position piston in bore and crankshaft in block so that the piston/connecting rod assembly will not be impeded when pressed into the bore
Gently tap on the upper edge of the compressor to make sure the bottom edge is in contact with the cylinder at all points
Press firmly and steadily on top of piston sliding it from the compressor into the cylinder bore. Do not let up until piston is completely in the bore. If it stops before it completely enters the bore, a ring has popped out from the compressor and failed to enter the bore

Do not hammer piston assembly into block or rings may be damaged. If you cannot push the piston in by hand or if a ring has popped out, reset the ring compressor and try again. Multiple tries is not uncommon for the novice

Attach Rod to Crankshaft

Lubricate bearing surfaces
Use 10 mm socket
Torque fasteners to 125 lbs in.
Make sure “match marks” align
Rotate crankshaft and check for free movement

Install Tappets

Apply Oil to Tappets
Install intake and exhaust tappets into block.

Make sure timing marks of cam gear and crankshaft gear are aligned
Install the thrust washer that rides above the crank gear.

Lubricate cover bearing
If difficult to install, check that gasket surfaces are parallel with each other
Use 10 mm socket
Torque fasteners in sequence to 210 lbs in.

Install key in crankshaft
Slide flywheel onto crankshaft
Install Fan and Starter Cup

Check that stud on Starter Cup fits into hole on flywheel

Install Valve Assembly

Install the INTAKE and the EXHAUST valves into their respective positions in the cylinder head.
Remember, the INTAKE valve is larger than the EXHAUST valve

Install the intake valve seal onto the intake valve.
Slide the valve springs onto both valves and lock them in place with the valve spring keepers.

1) Adjust Valve Lash

a) If previous instruction leveling pushrods was completed, piston should be at TDC

b) Move Piston To ¼” Past TDC in direction of normal engine rotation (CW as viewed from rewind side) This insures that the compression release will not effect clearance setting

c) Adjust Valve Clearance

d) Intake Valve .004-.006”

e) Exhaust Valve .006-.008”

Valve clearance adjustments take a bit to get used to. The adjustment is generally performed by running a screw or nut in or out. This is the easy part. The problems arise when we attempt to lock the adjustment in. The lock mechanism is a nut or screw that jams the adjustment and locks it in. The lock mechanism essentially jams one threaded component against another. Because threads are like a ramp, tightening a nut will change an adjustment by pushing the nut up or down the ramp. So, once valve clearance is set, it is likely to change once the lock mechanism is engaged. The technician learns to compensate for this by setting the clearance a bit wide or a bit close initially. Practice makes perfect!

Install Rewind Starter Assembly

Before tightening screws, pull starter rope until starter engages with starter cup. This centers starter in relation to cup.
Hold in position and tighten 8 mm screws.

Mount Speed Control Bracket

Install 2, 8mm screws
Install longer screw nearest cylinder head
Torque both to 85 lbs in.
Position red wire eye under screw, tilt down

Back off the 10mm nut on the lever 1 to 2 turns
Spread the slot at the end of the arm slightly

Be careful with gasket orientation

Slide carburetor along studs until the governor link can be installed

Perform Static Governor Adjustment

Rotate throttle plate from idle to wide open
Watch rotation of governor lever on shaft
Move throttle to fast
Turn governor shaft in same direction
Use 10mm socket
Torque to 30 lbs in.
